Regular Meetings

February 23, 1999

First meeting in our new Bensalem meeting place. Attendance: Bethany, Tracy, and Hakimah; plus Cricket and Mrs. D.

This was our first straight-through rehearsal of our program for this year. We set up chairs as an imaginary audience and hammed it up. Our fifteen songs, with brief introductions, take about 30 minutes to perform. We also left room for an instrumental piece, if any of our instrumentalists is available for a particular performance.

September 23, 1998

Reorganizing with a bang! Nine girls attended for at least part of the meeting: Megan, Tracey, Vicky, Christa, Christina(1), Hakimah, Christina(2), Teresa, and Patricia; plus advisors Cricket, Fodie, and Mrs. D.

Opening Song: Ah La La (Shake a Hand)

Crickets Choice: Rose, Rose and Ah, Poor Bird
We saw how both songs can be sung not only as rounds but as counterpoint to each other -- it was beautiful!

Business: Temporary officers were appointed: Tracey as president and Christina(1) as secretary.
We chose "love and friendship" as a theme for building a song repertoire for this year.

December 2, 1997

Six NEW girls came: Chris, Sandy, Chrissy, Kerri, Shannon, and Shannon.

Our advisor, Cricket, talked to parents while everyone else made nametags. Then we played “Name That Tune:” Write your name on a piece of paper and then think of a song that starts with each letter. (Example: CRIS — Chocolate Chip Cookies, Ram Sam Sam, I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, Silent Night)

After the parents left we opened our meeting with the Telephone Song:

(Just keep changing the names until everyone is called -- nametags may come in handy.)

Hey, [Cricket]! I think I hear my name.
Hey, [Cricket]! I think I hear it again.
You’re wanted on the telephone! If it’s not [Chris] then I’m not home.
With a rick-tick-tickety-tick, oh yeah,
With a rick-tick-tickety-tick, oh yeah.

We went over the answers everyone got for “Name That Tune.” The songs used the most were:

Other Activities

December 7, 1997

Two members went to a meeting of the Bucks County Folk Song Society to generate support for the Singing Interest Group:

Cricket and I went to a meeting of the Bucks County Folk Song Society. When we arrived at the building I was nervous because everyone seemed very professional. A lot of them had instruments, like guitars or harmonicas, and were tuning them or practicing their songs. We sat down in one of the back rows, and pretty soon the meeting started.

The first thing that they did was to go around the circle we were sitting in, with each member singing a song they had found or written. The song had to relate to the chosen theme: the Magic of the Season. At least three people sang Joni Mitchell songs, some sang traditional songs, and some performed songs they had composed themselves.

As the members sang their songs and made comments to each other, like how funny a song was or where the person had first heard a certain song, I realized that it was more like a big group of friends. They were all different, and it showed in the way they performed, but they all supported and complimented each other.

I learned a lot of new songs, most of which I loved, and heard some old favorites. Even though at first I didn't think I would have a good time, it turned out that I did, and I would love to do something like this again.

The Singing Interest Group went Christmas caroling in Shannon's neighborhood. We sang two different carols at every house and always ended with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." We collected $11 in donations and two candycanes apiece.

Performances

March 23, 1999

Even though only three of us could make it, Mary Ann, Christina, and Cricket showed up to sing at White Billet nursing home in Hatboro. We sang our program for about a half-dozen residents gathered in their recreation room before dinner. We did the whole program with only a few hitches, and the audience applauded every song. They'd even like us to come back again -- maybe on a weekend if it'd be eaisier for more of us to get there.
