ARTICLE FROM IGNAZ KOHLBECKER-
8-7-1996
Just last week there was an article in the local paper.....
Humpert(Vor etwas uebet 70 Jahren, 1925, veroeffentlichte Dr. Theodor

came from bad Rotenfels'
Citizen families of old Gaggenau and there history
The widley branched Kohlbecker family is one of the oldest citizen
families in Gaggenua that can be traces from member to member. The
oldest holder of this name is Augustin Kohlbecker ( Kohlenbecker),
who first is mentioned as a citizen of Gaggenau in the taxbook of
1579. As this name does not appear in earlier taxbooks, says Humpert
(In 1925, Dr. Theodor Humpert, director of the local people and
citizen school, published the 'Alt-Gaggenauer Buergerfamilien'
{'Citizen families of old Gaggenua"}), it must be assumed that
Augustin Kohlbecker moved here around 1500 from Bad Rotenfels, where
holders of this name appear earlier.
Augustin Kohlbecker had two sons with the names Zacharias and
Lorenz. Belonging to the descendants of Zacharias are Amand
(1860-1935) and the son of Amand, Karl, the founder of the Kohlbecker
brickworks. The descendant of him then was the brickwork owner
(1860-1935), who has been mayor of Gaggenau from 1902 to 1919 and, on
his 70th birthday, has been appointed honory citizen of the town.
During the tenure of mayor Karl Kohlbecker were the industrial
rise of Gaggenau, the construction of the old city hall, wich was
destroyed in 1944, and the construction of the gas works. Between
1902 and 1919, the number of citizens almost doubled from 2.200 to
4.000. Mayor Karl Kohlbecker, after whom the street along the Murgtal
railways is named, is the orgin of the well known architecture family
of the same name.
