Otto!!
This a letter written by Otto's Human to Nominate him for the
Pet of the Month Award at FUZZYDOG.COM.
It is reposted here with his Human's Permission.
Hi, I would like to nominate my dog Otto. He is a very interesting k-9. He loves Children and very young babies alike.. he is extremely gentle and loving. I take him to shelters for abused and abandoned children, and which he seems to love. It's as if he knows these kids need to share the emotions with a dog.
There was one little girl at one of the shelters in my home state of Pa. that stood in the doorway watching, sucking her thumb, while Otto did a few interesting tricks. After he went around the room with his candybag in his mouth and gave the children some candy and kisses, he strolled over to the little girl standing in the doorway and dropped his bag, looked right at her and sighed deeply and tilted his head. I started to get choked up. Suddenly she reached out, grabbed Otto by his collar and led him into another room. I followed very shortly after.
Upon entering the room, I saw a sight which I have never seen: Otto was sitting on the floor facing the little girl, who had her whole body almost completely wrapped around Otto. He looked over to me with his newly watered eyes, and blinked slowly 3 times. I started to get choked up again. The little girl whispered in his ear something of which I couldn't hear, climbed off of him and asked him to lay down on the floor. Otto embraced this command with sheer willingness. She next rubbed his belly and kissed him at least a hundred times, all while constantly whispering in his ear. When she was finished, she walked Otto back over to me standing in the doorway, took her thumb out of her mouth, and asked me if he could come back tomorrow. I instantly replied, "Yes, of course he can." She then whispered something into Otto's ear again, which produced a look of utter embarassment on his face. We walked out to the front desk hand in hand with her holding onto Otto's collar, and Otto looking at her and me.
Upon talking with the Program coordinator, She told me that the little girl whose name was Maggie, hadn't spoken a word since she was placed into the shelter which she now is living. She was a severly abused child, both of her parents were drug addicts, and her mother was also a prostitute. Otto and I went everyday for the next 2 weeks to see his newfound friend Maggie. Otto would do anything that she had asked of him, until then I was the only one who could really command alot of action from him. He watches her for hours while I go and work my friend's husky with the children.
Last week (we go only once every 2 weks now.) I caught her showing Otto pictures in a book, he seemed to be enjoying himself quite a bit, they were having a tea party, Otto had a bib on and was sittin at the other end of the floor sitting (at the) tea table with all of splendid plastic tea cups placed carefully on it. She was showing him pictures from a book called Carl the Rottweiler. I would never have guessed in a million years that someone would actually take the time this artist has to show people the true identity of what a Rottweiler is, a gentle, loving, highly intelligent dog. They are not a follower but a partner in your everyday activities.
Well Maggie is being adopted by a family that can't have children, and she is really looking forward to going. They are getting a Rottweiler, (she asked them for one). And will be living closer to me, 1/2 hour away. They had asked me to train their Rottie so he is like mine. I whole heartedly accepted. Maggie will help me of course!!
I love my dog, please give him some space in your heart and web page..
Thanks, Frank M Brigandi
