Love at First Sight
When I saw your blonde hair, just like mine, I just had to have a taste of it! I ran across the deck to where you were standing below and grabbed your hair in my little mouth......daddy was yelling at me but you turned around and squealed with delight as I bit your nose and licked your face. You hadn't even noticed daddy yet but I thought to myself, 'I have to get them
together....I want her for my mommy'. It was love at first sight!
And so it was. I made daddy fall in love with you too and then every weekend after that, we would all swim in the lake and go for long walks together. I rarely let the two of you go anywhere without me!
In the mornings, the kids down at the lake would scream my name and then I would ask if I could go out and play. All of the neighbors knew that if a toy was missing from the sand box, shoes from the porch, or beach towels from the clothes line, that they could find them at our house. Only once, that little boy was crying while he was chasing me for that horsy I had in my mouth. You scolded me but I heard you and daddy laughing about it that evening.
A couple of years later, daddy and I moved to your apartment in the city. It was pretty and you let me sit on your couch.... I had plenty of socks to play with but, I hated those steps and I missed my lake. Next thing I knew, you bought me a house! Lots of woods to romp in, a creek to swim in...I loved you even more than I did before.
Then one day when you were rubbing my belly, you found a lump. You thought I had swallowed a tennis ball and took me to this man called Doctor so he could look at it. Daddy was out of town for three weeks and by the time he got home, I couldn't sit very well and daddy was really mad at you because you had let the ball grow in my belly.
The day after daddy got home, we went to Cleveland (and I thought
'yuck....we're Steeler fans and shouldn't be here'). Another man called doctor wanted to look at the ball inside me with his machine. You took a walk and when you came back, I heard you whisper to daddy 'there are tissue boxes everywhere in here!'
When the doctor was done with me (his pretty girl friends were so nice), they brought me back to you. You had one of those tissues in your hand and sat on the floor with me. I wasn't sure what was going on..... I couldn't hear because you were holding my head so tight. Daddy asked the doctor a question and you let go long enough to give daddy one of those tissues.... then I heard the doctor say 'I support that decision one hundred
percent'.
Now daddy was stealing those tissues out of one of those big boxes and we all sat on the floor together for a little while. Then the doctor and one of his pretty girlfriends came back. The doctor held my leg and I felt a little pinch but just like magic, all of my pain went blessedly away and I went to sleep with my head in your arms. As I closed my eyes I thought of
how much I loved you when I saw you that first time, but I never loved you more than that last time.
