Dougald McKechnie ~ 1861 Census

In Esquesing Township in 1861 the Agricultural Census was taken
and the following is what is reported for Concession 5, Lot 10 for
Dougald McKechnie and his wife Janet.

(Dougald was the son of Gilbert McKechnie & Jessie)
(Janet was the daughter of James Stewart & Janet McGregor)

It gives a wonderful, clear picture of these homesteaders and what they had accomplished
!

100 acres were owner occupied by Dougald & Janet, young son James age 2
and Dougald's younger sister Euphemia age 16.
40 of these acres were 'improved'

21 acres of wheat/100 bushels in spring wheat
30 bushels of barley
100 bushels of oats
4 bushels of peas

.25 acres in potatoes/40 bushels potatoes
400 bushels of turnips

1 milk cow
1 other horned cattle
1 sheep

If you compare this to Janet Stewart McKechnie's PARENTS' property and livestock,
you will notice the striking difference in their financial circumstances.
