Edward Manicom & Edna Crawford


Edward Thomas MANICOM was born Dec 26 1897 in historic Tintagel, Cornwall England.
He was the son of William Geake MANICOM and Elizabeth Ann HOOPER.


Mary Edna CRAWFORD was born May 8 1891 in Camlachie Ontario.
She was the daughter of James CRAWFORD and Margaret JOHNSON.


As a very young child, Edna (as she was called) was made aware of the fragility of life.
Her much loved father, James CRAWFORD,
died in a freak railroad accident on Mar 6 1900 at the age of 39.
(He was the son of John CRAWFORD and Mary KERR)


Margaret (Maggie) was left a young widow (age 32 yrs) with 6 children aged 2-11 years.
Not only was she faced with the loss of her husband,
she was faced with the knowledge and reality
that there was virtually no money with which to raise her family!

She would have to make do somehow with little,
and most of the children would have to quit school
and do various kinds of odd jobs to help the family's financial situation.


Edward's father, William Geake MANICOM,
emigrated to Canada to join his uncle, William Henry MANICOM, in Ontario in 1911.
Elizabeth Ann and their children followed in 1913.
(Son James died in 1911 at the age of 15)

Edward's father was a boot and shoemaker in Cornwall,
but upon arriving in Ontario, put his hand to farming.
William & Elizabeth eventually settled in Adelaide Township Middlesex Ontario,
dying in 1935 and 1946 respectively.

Edward married Edna CRAWFORD on Oct 7 1920.

Their 1st child, a son, was born in Jan 1922.

What followed, was a period of tragedy no parent would wish to pass through!

Twins Raymond John & Ralph Alexander were born Sept 7 1923. Sadly, Raymond John died Oct 8 1923. Ralph Alexander died just 2 days later, on Oct 10 1923. Donald Crawford was born Apr 15 1925. Little Donald only lived a few short months, dying in Sep 1925.

One can only imagine the heartbreak of this young family!
This time of sadness was followed by the births of a daughter and another son,
who survived and thrived.

Edward & Edna celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 1945.

Edna died only a year after this momentous event,
on Jun 21 1946 in Sarnia.
Her mother Margaret Johnson CRAWFORD,
had died in Camlachie the previous January.


Edward remarried on Mar 6 1948 to a widow.
Edward & Jennie celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 1973.

Edward died Sep 9 1974 in Sarnia Ontario,
while his 2nd wife followed in 1976.
