David Halliday
1816 - 1897
David HALLIDAY was christened December 14 1816 in Anderston Glasgow Lanark Scotland.
He was the eldest of children of James HALLIDAY and Elisabeth AIRTH,
who were married on August 29 1815.
David was a weaver by trade
and had managed factories at Maryhill, Rutherglen and Paisley in Scotland.
David married Jane LOCHEAD on March 16 1838 in Rutherglen Lanark. |

The children of David & Jane were:
1) James Augustus born Nov 3 1838,
married Jane HENDERSON (10 children)
(She was the daughter of Thomas HENDERSON & Sarah HUGHES)
He went west to teach in British Columbia in 1872,
taking one of the last clipper ships around the Horn.
2) David HALLIDAY Jr born Jun 17 1844,
married Mary TAIT (10 children)
(She was the daughter of Samuel TAIT & Elizabeth McPHAIL)
He took up land in Bromley Township but later moved to Chatham.
3) Elisabeth Airth born May 20 1847
4) Agnes Barr born Apr 18 1850,
married Robert Leitch JAMIESON.
5) Thomas born Dec 18 1855,
married his cousin Elizabeth who died giving birth to a daughter, Elizabeth.
At the invitation of his uncle, Sgt Henry AIRTH,
David came to Canada in 1848 with his sisters, Esther and Agnes Marion.
In 1849, he was joined by his wife Jane, his 2 sons, a brother and 3 more sisters.
When his family was settled,
David attended Normal School in Toronto and when he had graduated,
taught school in Horton and in other Ontario communities.
He later kept a store at Maryborough Wellington County,
before returning to the Horton homestead in 1871.
David HALLIDAY led the South Renfrew Reform Association for many years.
He served as chairman of the Board of License Commissioners.
He was also active in agricultural circles.

David died Jun 20 1897 in Horton Township while Jane died in 1903.
