Always Dream by Kristi Yamaguchi with Greg Brown

I brought this book and personally I love it. It contains great pictures and illustrations of Kristi when she was a little girl and it tells you about her life growing up--from her obstacles and difficulties in life, to her win at the Olympics, and learning about her Japanese heritage. It's like reading a scrapbook about her life. It's an inspirational story, one where every Kristi fan will enjoy.

Here's what Kristi said about the creation of Always Dream: "I felt with all the other books out there, the unauthorized ones, I should do one myself, with a say in the kind of direction I wanted it to go in, with the message I want to get across. Seeing it come together, step-by-step was a very rewarding process - sort of like putting together a skating program from the beginning." (quote from the Houston Chronicle 3/18/98)

Figure Skating for Dummies

This is another book Kristi has co-written. With Christy Ness and Jody Meacham (a writer for the San Jose Mercury News).

The following is a brief synopsis of the book by Amazon.Com: A complete introduction to figure skating, this fun and friendly book gives figure skating enthusiasts an inside peek at the colorful and competitive world of figure skating. Easy to understand explanations of the technical merits, judging and scoring are given. It contains black and white photos and line drawings.

Books Written about Kristi

Note: these are the "unauthorized" books she spoke about. Unauthorized or not, these books are a great resource for pictures and information about Kristi's early amateur years.

Kristi Yamaguchi: Artist on Ice
By Shiobhan Donohue. The Achievers Series [1993]
Softcover - 64 pages.

I recommend this book! This book is well written and researched. It progresses and follows through her life - from her early beginnings as an singles skater who started "to correct her feet", to juggling the partnership with Rudi Galindo (yes, Rudi) while competing in singles at the same time. To the hardships she encountered along the way (deaths of her grandfather and pairs coach Jim Hulick), and then to her experiences and eventual win of the "Triple Crown of Figure Skating" - winning the Nationals, Olympics and Worlds all in one year.

It contains black & white photos that are great - I especially enjoyed the "Kristi and Rudi" ones. (they both looked so young and small :)

Kristi Yamaguchi: Pure Gold
By: Jeff Savage. A Taking Part Book [1993 and 1996]
Softcover - 63 pages

I recommend this book just for the 27 color photos alone! Which I might add are mostly from the Associated Press (meaning, you've might have seen some of the photos at one time or another) of Kristi around the 1992 Olympic year, on ice and off.

Kristi Yamaguchi
By: Sam Wellman. Figure Skating Legends [1998]
Hardcover - 64 pages.

This is another well written Kristi book. Since this book has been written fairly recently, you can read (short) passages about Kristi's fourth win at the 1997 World Professional Championships, her Always Dream foundation, Stars On Ice routines etc., in addition to her "history" growing up. The book contains black & white photos and illustrations.

Kristi Yamaguchi: World Class Ice Skater
by: Liza N. Burby [August 1998]
Hardcover.

After all the great Kristi biography books above, this book disappointed me. The book only dealt with Kristi's amateur career and failed to mention any of her professional accomplishments, puzzling since this book was published last summer. It also boggles me how the author provided pronunciation keys for the word "title" and not "Kjarsggard".

The color photos were also cropped and zoomed rather unattractively. One "highlight" of the book is a startling photo of Kristi wearing very light blue color contact lenses - presumably from Durasoft J

In conclusion, the book might be great for children 7 years and under. For this Kristi fan, the $15 price tag wasn't worth it (at the time). But knowing me, I'll probably purchase it at a later date anyway. Only 'cause it's Kristi-related - regardless of how bad the book was.
