"I wonder what eleventh grade will be like" commented 15-year-old Cassasndra to her 16-year-old friend, Samantha as they walked to school on Tuesday, September 2. "I don't know," came the answer from Samantha "but I sure hope that Randy won't be like last year." Last year all of the boys had taken bubble gum, chewed it up, and said "you want some abc bubblegum? Already Been Chewed, get it?" and thought it was funny. Samantha had stopped dating Randy and the boys had stopped being silly. "Yeah, I hope the boys won't be like last year too." "And I bet Katy hopes the same thing" said Samantha.
Samantha was right. Samantha saw her friend Katy's boyfriend, Milo catching up. She looked longingly at his handsome features, knowing that she could never own them alone. Unless...already a scheme was forming in her mind. "Uh, I have to practice math, Cassandra" she lied pathetically. "O.k., I will leave" said Milo. "No, please don't!" "Why not?" he asked. She searched her brain for an answer. "I am not really good at it" she lied perfectly. Cassandra was puzzled. She knew Samantha was good at math. Unless...She might be making a scheme..."Don't suspect your friend" she ordered herself sharply. So she left, puzzled, for school.
Meanwhile, Samantha's scheme to steal Katy's boyfriend was working perfectly. "Now that we're alone, let's get to business" she said. "O.k., what 12x12?" "No, not that kind of business! I mean, do you notice how strange Katy has been acting lately?" "What do you mean?" "I mean Katy's going to break up with you." "Where did you get that idea?" "Katy told me" Samantha said simply. "I am going to break up with her first!" Milo declared. "What?!?" Samantha pretended to be simply horrified at the thought. "Yes, and I am going to go out with you first."
That night, Samantha had a date with Randy. At 8:15 she went on the 15 minute drive to Denny's. She scanned the room for Randy. She ran up to him and hugged him and cried tears. "I found out what a nice man Milo is and... I like him, and..." "You want to break up with me?" asked Randy. "Yes" came the answer from Samantha.
Meanwhile, at Taco Bell, Milo was shouting at his girlfriend. "I have discovered the truth about you!" he stated angrily. "You are really nothing but a selfish pig to go out with guys behind my back without even telling me!" He walked out of Taco Bell without letting Katy reply, slammed the door of his car and drove away leaving a very puzzled Katy behind.
That night as Cassandra got ready for bed, the phone rang. "I'll get it!" she called down the stairs. "Hello, who is this?" "Hi Cassandra, this is Katy." "What's up?" "Seriously, asking that at this moment is like asking "is water wet?", Milo has just broken up with me and I have a hunch that your friend, Scheming Samantha has something to do with it. I think that she told Milo that I wanted to break up with him." "Why would she do a thing like that?" "I don't have the faintest idea, but I think she wants Milo to herself. I think you had better have a talk with your friend." At that, she hung up.
Cassandra did a lot of thinking that night. Obviously, if Samantha was going to go out with Milo, she would have also broken up with Randy. Randy would be sad and lonely. And even if it meant that she would have to drop Michael, she couldn't bear the thought of a heartbroken Randy. Anyway, Katy had told her that if there was a point in life where she couldn't be with the person she loved, the first person she would go out with would be Michael, and here it was, Katy could not be with Milo and Michael was free. She made a date with Randy for 8:30 at Burger King.
"Hi" Cassandra said when they met at Burger King. "What's going on here?" demanded Randy. "First Samantha breaks up with me, and then her best friend comes up to me and makes a date at Burger King at 8:30!" "I can see where you're puzzled. To tell you the truth, I am too." And she spilled the whole story out. "So you just decided to make a date with me to comfort me?" demanded Randy. "Well, yes, and because I like you." Cassandra admitted. "We had better talk to Milo now that we know what is going on. Do you remember seein them together?" "Well, yes, once when Samantha was practicing math," Cassandra answered "but I don't think we should worry about that. And we don't have all the answers" Cassandra reminded him. "We have who, where, what, when and how, but we don't have why. We can think we do, but we don't. We think it's because she wants to steal Milo." "But all the facts point to it!" protested Randy. "Seem to point to it," corrected Cassandra "but we might learn what why is if we go to Milo's house."
It was a long time before they got to Milo's house. It seemed to keep going and going and going and going forever. But when they got there, Milo was nowhere to be seen. They started to walk away, but Milo popped out from behind his shed. "You scared us!" said Cassandra and Randy together. They both giggled until they could hardly breathe. "Well," said Randy when they both caught their breath, "we came here because we did not know what you did together that time when you and Samantha were alone." Milo sighed. "I may as well tell you the truth" he said.
"The truth is that we weren't talking about math. Instead, Samantha told me that Katy was going out with guys behind my back and that Katy had told her that she was going to break up with me. I told her that I was going to break up with her first and go out with Samantha." "And on the next date, you called Katy a selfish pig!" finished Cassandra. "But I do like it the way it is. We've all had a change and that is what makes life exciting." "I agree too" agreed Milo. "Me three!" put in Randy. "I sure hope," said Cassandra "that Katy and Michael are having fun." "I agree" said Milo. "I disagree" said Randy. Milo and Cassandra looked at him. "Hey" he said "you said that changes make life exciting, not puzzling." They all laughed.
Katy was having fun. They had went to the fair and were getting on a roller-coaster. "This will be fun" remarked Katy enthusiastically. "Of course it will be fun! When has a roller-coaster ride been a tragedy?" corrected Michael. They handed in the tickets and got in. It started up on a high hill and stopped. Then they were on the move again. Katy was pushed to the side, which knocked her unconsious and then pushed to the other side and she fell out. Michael didn't notice her disappearance.
When he did, the ride was over. He found himself calling the ambulance. When the police and ambulance arrived, questions rang out from all sides. "What happened?" "When did it happen?" "Where were you on the roller-coaster ride when it happened?" "How did it happen?" He had to admit that he didn't see it happen. "Anyway, the fact is that she got knocked off the roller-coaster ride and we need to get her back!" He decided to try to talk her back. He talked and talked and talked and talked but nothing worked. Finally, he said his multiplication tables out loud to her. She opened her eyes. "Milo?" "No, Michael." "Michael!" She sat up and pulled him into a kiss.

The End
