Adopt-a-Highway Program

In 1997, while holding the postion of Senior Patrol Leader, Daniel Lowe introduced to the Scouts of our Troop, the idea of "Adopting" a mile of Highway to be kept cleaned.

During a November Troop meeting, they were assigned the mile marked as #198 on NM Highway 70 between Alamogordo, NM and Las Cruces, NM.

The conditions to the "Adoption" was that they would clean the "Mile" at least twice a year. (Once being on "Earth Day") Well, they have be cleaning this "Mile" about every 5-7 weeks. This makes this part Hwy 70, about the cleanest part of the 65 miles between the two towns.

One unfortunate part of this "Mile" is that is located right before the U.S. Border Patrol check-point. (The last chance to get rid of illegal drugs before the check-point) Our Troop recognized this problem, and only allows the adults to pick up trash on the east-bound lane. They have found, 1 "pot pipe", 1 roach (partly smoked joint), and a small bottle containing "pure cocaine", (appx. value $125.00) and a Playboy. (The Playboy was found by a "Female Leader",(Buffy) walking with the scouts, after the scouts had walked right by it. They now look for garbage much harder!) These items were turned into the U.S. Border Patrol for disposal. (Except the "Playboy", it was thrown away, at least that what the "male-leaders" told us.)

Along with the "conditions" was an agreement with the State of New Mexico, that the "State" would put up a sign to let drivers know who is cleaning this part of the highway. They told us they were about 12-18 months from having the sign made. Thanks to Jim Moore, owner of "Dollar Cab Company", we now have 2 signs on the highway to let drivers know "who" keeps this part of the highway clean. Thanks, Jim!

Please, as you travel, remember, it may be Boy Scouts cleaning up the Highway your on...Please...

DO NOT LITTER!
