Troop 149 in the '70's!

Dean Kern
Scoutmaster-Dean Kern

The picture above was taken by Assistant Scoutmaster, Greg Wilson. If you look real close, you can see what Mr. Kern was really remembered for...Cooking! He's got the spatula in hand...and it was always "pancakes" in the mornings. Now, that brings up a good story...

If you saw the last picture of the "First Hike", I mentioned a Scout by the name of James Lyons. Now James "hated" pancakes. (Up to this point, he'd never had one of Mr. Kern's pancakes) He had gotten up that morning, and all we listened to was how he would NOT eat pancakes. He just wouldn't do it. Well Mr. Kern asked him just to try one...a small one, about the size of a "silver dollar". If he didn't like it, Mr. Kern would do the breakfast dishes. (That had never happened before!) Well sure enough, James liked that "little" pancake, and asked for another. Well to make a "long" story "short", James kept Mr. Kern busy that morning making pancakes. James ate 21 full size pancakes. More than ANY scout had ever eaten before.

Now I guess his talent of making pancakes never rubbed off on me...I've never been able to make good pancakes, they are always too runny or too dry. But that's OK! He taught me other things. Things that I do very well.

Thanks Dad.
