My great great grandfather was Charles William Horrell. Charles was born in March 1860 (Iowa) and died 12 June 1915 in Venice (Madison County), Illinois. According to his death certificate, his father was John Horrell and mother was a Coleman. He moved to Illinois ca 1875, again, according to his death certificate.

Charles married Alta Jane Armes. Alta was born 5 Jan 1866 in West Frankfurt, Illinois to Moses Armes and Matilda Riddle Armes. Alta and Charles married in West Frankfurt, Illinois. Together Alta and Charles had 2 children; Omer and Grace. Grace is my great grandmother.

Grace Mae Horrell married twice. First to Arch Mace where one child was born, Bernadine. This marriage didn't last and the couple divorced. Bernadine was adopted by Alta and Charles. Grace married a second time to Jacob / John SYERS and had another child, Eleanor Clarice Syers. This marriage was doomed as well but lasted longer. Grace and Mr. SYERS married in 1916 (location unknown) and he left the home ca 1926. It was in the 30's that Grace obtained a divorce in Madison County, Illinois.

Since Alta and Charles Horrell married in West Frankfurt, Illinois it is likely that Charles and Alta were both living in that area - probably neighbors. I have researched Iowa census indexes looking for Horrell but came up empty.

Through the magic of the Internet, I found several Horrells living in Southern Illinois and wrote notes explaining my interests in the Horrell family genealogy. I have found a number of Horrells who have pointed me to others who might have a knowledge of the family's history. I have also used the Social Security Death Index which is an index on the Internet that gives Name, birth and death dates, residence ... issuing state. This index gave me the names of many Southern Illinois HORRELLs and a clue to some names. I have purchased a couple of death certificates hoping to find another HORRELL with a Coleman mother and John Horrell as their father. (That cost me a fair amount of money without any matches - so far.)
