Try-Its are a fun part
of being a Brownie. There are several activities that you can try,
that's why they are called Try-Its! You don't have to do everything exactly
perfect; you just have to try. There are special patches for each
Try-It that you complete.
There are six activities
for each Try-It. You have to complete four of the six activities to finish
it. Then you can plan a neat and special way to recieve your Try-It patches.
The
Girl Scout Way: This was the
very first Try-It that we completed! We did this at one of our first
meetings when we were learing all about being a Girl Scout, special dates
to remember and how we celebrate those special occasions. We completed
this Try-It on November 11, 1997.
The
People of the World: We finished this Try-It on February 3rd, 1998.
We had a lot of fun playing games from other countries, like Fruit Salad
and Rabbit Without a House. We also learned how the people who live
in Thailand do batik, which is painting beautiful patterns on silk.
We colored on paper with white crayons and then painted over that with
watercolors and our design magicly appeared! We also hunted for different
languages in our Brownie Handbooks and read a story about the Blue Bird
Girl Guides in Thailand.
Working
it Out: We will be working on this Try-it in April. We will learn
about how we feel after different things happen to us, how to keep our
cool, how to resolve a conflict and how to be a bette listener.
Manners:
We completed the manners at our
November 25th meeting. There wasn't a better time to work on table
manners, showing respect for others, being a good helper and the right
way to use a phone. Those are all of the things that we did to complete
the Manners Try-It! Great Job, Girls!
Safety:
We finished the safety try-it on December 9th. It took
us to meetings to complete this try-it. At our first meeting we discussed
ways to be safe on the street, what to do when there is a fire, how to
behave at a playground and we put together our troop first aid kit.
This kit will go with us everywhere! You did a great job, girls, and thank
you for helping us put our kit together!
Good
Food: What fun had today learning about good food and the best part
of all, eating it! We tasted several types of dairy foods, had a pasta
with tomato sauce on it and learned how to be a great shopper by planning
healthy meals. We completed this Try-it at a meeting in February.
Cookies Count!: We completed this Try-It on January 6, 1998.
What a great way to start the New Year! We learned about setting
goals and each girl set their own goal for the amount of boxes of cookies
they would like to sell. We also learned to be sure to use our best
manners while selling cookies, being a good friend or neighbor by giving
a box of cookies as a gift to a sick friend or senior citizen. You
all did wonderful!
Science
Wonders: We will be working on this Try-it at our March 3rd meeting.
We will have fun learning about chemical changes, make bubbles and rocky
candy!
My
Body: We will be working on this Try-it at our March 17th meeting.
We will learn about our brain power, how everyone's fingerprints are different,
make a fit body wheel and test our reflexes!
Sound
of Music: We completed this Try-it on February 24th and did
we ever have fun making sounds of music! We made shakers from plastic plates
and beans, kazoos with cardboard rolls and waxed paper and we made wind
instruments by blowing in our drinks with straws at snack time! After
all of that we finished, we struck up the band and played songs with our
new instruments!
Building
Art: We will be working on this Try-it at our March 10th meeting.
We will be looking at buildings, design a better neighborhood, learn about
space for people with special needs and the strength of shapes.
Earth
is Our Home: We will be working on this Try-it at a meeting in March.
We will learn more about recycling, make an oil spill and make terrariums!
