MEN'S HEAVY 2 STRAND MITTENS

REQUIREMENTS: YARN: 8-ounces of 4 ply knitting worsted
NEEDLES 1-pr. #8 single pointed
USE 2 STRANDS OFTHE YARN THROUGH ENTIRE PATTERN MITTEN

RIGHT MITTEN:

CUFF: Using the yarn 2 strands. Cast on 30 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1. for 2 ½ inches. Now work in the stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row 4 rows.

THUMB INCREASES:

1st inc: K 15 sts, inc. in next st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st, k 12 sts. Purl across row.

2nd inc: k 15 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 3, inc,1 next st, k 12 sts. Purl next row.
3rd inc: k 15 sts, inc. in next st, k 5, inc. 1 st in next st, k 12 sts. Purl next row.

4th inc: K 15 sts. inc. 1 st in next st, k 7, inc. 1 st in next k 12 sts. Purl next row.
5th inc: K 15 sts, inc. 1 st in st, k 9, inc. 1 st in next st, k 12 st. Purl next row.

THUMB SEPARATION:

K 16 sts and place onto holder; k 11 sts and leave on the

needle; place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st, turn and purl over sts, cast on (13 sts).

Work in stockinette stitch sts for 2 1/4 inches.
1st dec: * k 1 st, k 2 tog repeat from* across row. Purl 2 together across

next row. Break yarn leaving 7 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw through the sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up thumb.

HAND: Place the sts off the first st holder onto a needle tie yarn in with

the same needle pick up and knit 4 sts. along thumb gusset: knit the sts off 2nd holder. Work on these sts in stockinette stitch until the mittens measure 4 inches above thumb.

DECREASES AT TIP OF MITTEN:
1st dec. * Knit 2 tog ,repeat from * across row. k 2 tog repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 2nd dec.* k 5 sts k2 tog. Repeat from * across row. Purl across next row.

3rd dec * k 4 sts, k2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl across next row.

4th dec. k 4 sts across row.

Break yarn leaving enough to sew with, Sew up side of mitten.
Left Mitten: When you come to the thumb increases.

Reverse the instructions 1st inc:

K 12 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st. k 15 sts.

Work remainder of mitten to correspond to right one.
