The Slipper Sox pattern is as follows:The directions for the sole are found on this link

generalinfo.htm where you can get more information on joining and finishing.

CUFF: With size 3 double-pointed needles, using the background color, cast on 52 stitches. divide the stitches on three needles and join. Work in a ribbing of knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches for 6 inches. ( about 40 rows)

Knit 1 row plain and in this row increase (in about every 5th stitch) to 62 stitches.

Divide the stitches so that you have 31 stitches for the heel on one needle and 31 stitches for the instep on two needles.

HEEL: Work the heel "double" as follows: Knit 1 stitch, slip I stitch across the row. Purl back. Repeat these two rows for 2 3/4 inches (14 knit-slip rows) .

Start to turn the heel on a purl row, as follows:

Purl 17 stitches, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn.

Slip 1, knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 1, turn.

Slip 1, purl 5, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn.

Slip 1, knit 6, knit 2 together, knit 1, turn.

Continue to decrease in the same way having 1 more stitch between the decreases after each row) until there are 17 stitches left.

(With the right side of the work ready on one needle). Start at the center of the heel and knit to within 3 stitches of the end of the needle, knit 2 together, knit 1. Knit across the instep. On the last needle knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to the end of the needle.

Continue to decrease in the same way for 2 more rows. You will then have 31 stitches for the heel and 31 stitches for the instep. Now you are ready to work the pattern.

Begin with the instep needle. Read the diagram from right to left. Carry the yarn loosely at the back of the work. Break off yarn, leaving a few inches to work in later with a tapestry needle.

Start to decrease for the toe at row 45 (37) on the diagram. Work in pattern and decrease as follows: (Work in pattern to row 46. Discontinue pattern at row 46, Continue in solid background. DO not cut yarn, continue to twist into the background yarn.

Instep needle: Knit 1 stitch, slip 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, pass the slip stitch over the knit stitch, knit to within 3 stitches of the end of the needle, knit 2 together, knit 1. First sole needle: Knit 2 together, knit to the end of the needle. Second sole needle: Knit to within 2 stitches of the end of the needle, knit 2 together.

Knit 1 row. Continue to decrease in the same way every other row until there are 17 stitches for the instep and 17 stitches for the sole. Break the yam leaving about 15 inches of the background color.

Join with the Kitchener stitch.
