Baptist, North Carolina. Notes for MARY MATILDA BUCHANAN: Grandma Wise/Buchanan and Uncle Talmage lived in Spindale, North Carolina
and this was close enough for walking to visit them. Grandma Wise had a
neat well-house, built of rock, this was used as a place to keep milk,
butter, fruits, and vegetables. It stayed cool in summer. Grandma Wise had
cows and Talmage had a small cart he used to take milk an butter to regular
customers, I guess you could say a "mini-dairy". I enjoyed visiting with
them as Grandma went out to change the cows grazing post after lunch time
and Grandma wore an apron all the time, and it had pockets, and she always
carried a neat little pocket knife. Grandma dipped snuff and so we sometimes
would take walks and cut small twigs from the Sweet Gum tree to be used as a
toothbrush for her snuff. I could have a toothbrush but no snuff, it would
stunt my growth. I also had my very own plate, and place to sit at Grandma's table. She had a bench on the backside next to the wall. She had neat
cupboards too. She played the accordian, sometimes called the "Jews Harp". ***Taken from Lois Hodge Dellinger's memories of Lee Pearson Hodge.
