Fischer Babies

Here are some photos of my first Fischer babies, hatched June 2001.

They are blue Fischers.

Blue Fischers originated from the crossing of Fischers with blue masked. Over the years breeders have tried to breed out the visual evidence of the blue masked -- primarily the dark heads. A blue Fischer should have a white forehead and bib, and gray on top and sides of the head. The birds in the first photo show this.

But the other two birds in this clutch are of lesser quality. The one on top has a small amount of white in his forehead, which may or may not improve as he molts into adult feather. But he is still too dark in the cheeks. The bird below and to the left (seen in profile) has even more black in his head, and would definitely not be a good candidate for breeding.

And here are a couple from my newest clutch -- hatched in the first week of October (2001).

I was really surprised to see that two of the five have bright white secondary down (instead of the normal grey like the other in the photo.) Looks like they might be White Fischer's! Yippee! Christmas has come early. I had no idea that mom and dad were split to white!

I'll post another picture when they feather in some.
