The new analytical writing section of the General GRE consists of two different analytical writing tasks: a 45-minute "Present Your Perspective on an Issue" task and a 30-minute "Analyze an Argument" task. The "Issue" task states an opinion on an issue of general interest and asks you to address the issue from any perspective or perspectives you want, as long as you provide relevant support for the views you express. The "Argument" task presents a different challenge — it requires you to critique (i.e., evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of) an argument by discussing how reasonable it is. In other words, you have to express how reasonable the argument is--not whether you agree or disagree it. Because the analytical writing section is a relatively new addition to the GRE General Test and I don't know anyone who is young enough to have taken this section, I have no advice to give about how to do well on this section. You may want to visit the GRE web site and try a Google search to find good advice on this section.
