"BENTON COUNTY TENNESSEE'S
          NATIVE AMERICAN'S"

"From Our Branch To - Yours"

My Native American research has been very enlightening, I've researched many different cultures and nationalities but never have I studied one that has been more full of mysteries.

Just recently, I heard from a lady, a very good friend of mine, that told me she was raised knowing her great-grandmother was a Cherokee Indian, but her family never talked about her "Indian Heritage",it was hidden as if ashamed of the fact.

Now many years later, my friend and her sister take great pride in knowing their roots and now years later, they are trying to find out more information on their Native American relatives.

So many times, I've heard the same kind of story, it is so sad that it has taken so many years to be proud of where we came from and WHO we are!

And there are the stories that many of us have heard of some ancestor, who was an "Indian Princess", most of these stories are fictitious.

I was raised with the notion that some unknown grandmother was of Indian descent- only to do my homework and discover, this was nothing but a family story. The story may have originated in the 1930's, when the Bureau of Indian Affairs began and families could draw a small check from the government by proving their direct Native American descent. Considering the fact that this was just after the Depression, many families attempted to claim descent, but very few people could prove their claim.

The following Melton & related lines are not documented, but are known by family members to be of Indian descent.None to my knowledge have ever attempted to prove their heritage, nor have ever drawn a government check.

Based on family histories, I have researched these lines and have come to the conclusion that there was an Indian bloodline, either by birth or marriage.

I have always enjoyed my Indian research and the local folklore. I'm lucky to be in an area that is rich in information on different tribes that traveled though Benton Co., TN and others that- Benton County was their home.

I hope you will enjoy this journey with me!

I hope in time more facts can be gathered to further prove my conclusions.
