Sent in by a friend of Bobby, with permisson to post
Hello, I love your website on Budgies. I have a male Budgie thats around 5 or 6 months old. His name is Bobby,
and he is blue with grey wings. Bobby's behavoir sometimes puzzles me. Maybe you can answer a couple of
questions for me. Bobby, loves to put everything in his small water cup. He even likes to put his seeds in there,
and lettuce, bread, anything. He also loved to throw his ball & bell in the water, why would a bird do this?
We had to tie his ball & bell to his rings in the cage so he couldn't, keep throwing them in there. He was making his cage a
mess. Also recently he started to roll back his paper on the bottom of his cage and make a mess with that too. He also
likes to open the doors of his cage with his beak so I had to tie them down with small plastic ties. He has tried to get the
ties off! He is a very stubborn determined bird, and I've had Budgies before, but have never had a bird like him. Is this
normal bird behavoir? Also he has not talked yet, though we we talk to him daily. He whistles alot though.
How long before they will talk?
Budgie Dictionary
Normal: (Adj.) nor'-mel
1) Not as should be; very different
from the ordinary conditions, standard, or type.
2) Anything you do not expect, expect.
This is typical behavior for a budgie. Actually each budgie will have its own personality thus differnt types of "play".
Some prefer to throw objects out the cage (to check if gravity is still working), while others like to hang upside down
from a pirch (stirdy or not) and flap vigorously to see how stong that pirch is that day.
As to when a budgie will talk its up to each bird on its own. Some are more inclined to talk than others. If the bird has a mirror
or another bird to play with, they will not be as inclined to talk. But it also depends upon how old your bird is as well as
how much training you do. Younger birds will talk easier and sooner than older birds. Usually if the training is "sufficient"
they will be talking by the time they are 1 year old. If the bird is stressed at all they will not talk. Such as loud kids around or
threats from other household pets, such as cats.
