Directions For the Card Trick Quilt Block

The Card Trick quilt block is an interesting pattern that is composed of right triangles and quarter triangles. This block can easily be pieced using speed piecing and rotary cutting.

This block uses three different fabrics,

two design fabrics, Fabric A and Fabric B , and a background fabric, Fabric C

Traditional Piecing Method:

To make this block, use the following templates:

Template A

Template B

Cut the following pieces:

4 Template A in Fabric A

4 Template A in Fabric B

4 Template A in Fabric C

4 Template B in Fabric A

4 Template B in Fabric B

4 Template B in Fabric C

Rotary Cutting Directions:

Cut four right triangles for Template A from Fabric A. Strip width is 4 7/8".

Cut four right triangles for Template A from Fabric B. Strip width is 4 7/8".

Cut four right triangles for Template A from Fabric C. Strip width is 4 7/8".

Cut four quarter triangles for Template B from Fabric A. Strip width is 5 1/4".

Cut four quarter triangles for Template B from Fabric B. Strip width is 5 1/4".

Cut four quarter triangles for Template B from Fabric B. Strip width is 5 1/4".

Piecing the Block:

1. Make two right triangles by piecing two Template B in Fabric A to two Template B in Fabric C.

Speed Piecing Alternative - Follow the directions for quarter triangles using 5 1/4" fabric strips.

2. Make two right triangles by piecing two Template B in Fabric B to two Template B in Fabric C.

Speed Piecing Alternative - Follow the directions for quarter triangles using 5 1/4" fabric strips.

3. Make two right triangles by piecing two Template B in Fabric A to two Template B in Fabric B.

Speed Piecing Alternative - Follow the directions for quarter triangles using 5 1/4" fabric strips.

4. Make two squares by piecing the right triangles formed from Template B in Fabrics A and C to Templates A in Fabric B.

5. Make two squares by piecing the right triangles formed from Template B in Fabrics B and C to Templates A in Fabric A.

6. Make one square by piecing the two right triangles formed from Template B in Fabrics A and B.

7. Make two squares by piecing two Template A in Fabric A to two Template A in Fabric C.

Speed Piecing Alternative - Follow the directions for right triangles using 4 7/8" fabric strips.

8. Make two squares by piecing two Template A in Fabric B to two Template A in Fabric C.

Speed Piecing Alternative - Follow the directions for right triangles using 4 7/8" fabric strips.

9. Make two strips by piecing one square composed of Template A in Fabrics B and C, one square composed of Template A in Fabric B and Template B in Fabrics A and C, and one square composed of Template A in Fabrics A and C.

10. Make one strip by piecing two squares composed of Template A in Fabric A and Template B in Fabrics B and C, and one square composed of Template B in Fabrics A and B.

11. Piece the three strips together to form the finished Card trick block.
