....ADVICE FOR NEW TEACHERS....

1. Do not transport students to and from school.
2. Do not attend parties and/or social functions sponsored by students outside the school program.
3. Do not allow yourself to be caught in any compromising situation.
4. Use extreme caution when touching any student. There are very few times when touching of a student could be considered a safe action.
5. Do not discuss subjects of an intimate nature with students.
6. Do not invite nor allow a student to visit your place of residence.
7. Do not initiate or participate in correspondence that addresses any issue that exceeds the limit of instructional concerns.
8. Use extreme caution when providing one-on-one extra help after school hours. It would be wise to notify other teachers near your room that you will be working with students in your room.
9. Always leave your door open and provide assistance to a student(s) in an area in the classroom that can easily be viewed from the hallway.
10. Be cautious if the same student makes a habit of requesting to stay after school for "extra help".
11. If you attempt to call parents regarding a student and always have the student answer the phone informing you that are not at home, mail a request home asking the parent to call the teacher.
12. Report suspected student "crushes" toward you to the counselors or fellow teachers near your room.
13. Keep copies and report handwritten notes/letters to counselors written by students that extends beyond instructional and academic issues.
14. Do not discuss your personal life with students, individually or in class.
15. Do not agree to sponsor parties or social functions for students that are not approved school activities with appropriate chaperones.
