....The Chalkboard....

TEACHERS' FAVORITE BOOKS

March 2 is the national celebration of reading -- Read Across America. In honor of this program teachers across the nation were surveyed by NEA and a list has been compiled of their favorite children's books.

At the very top of the list is the pre-teen classic by E.B. White, Charlotte's Web. It is the charming tale of the brief life of a spider and her unusual friendship with a pig. Also on the list are seeral books by Dr. Seuss. Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, earned eight books on the top 100. Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat took the third and fourth places.

There were a variety of other books selected ranging from the classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis and Magery Williams' The Veleteen Rabbit to more contemporary selections like Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (fifth place) and Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar (eigthth place). Also selected were The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, and The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. For a more complete list you can go to www.nea.org on the web and find the top 100 picks of the nation's teachers. (NEA can also be reached through AHEA's new home page!)
