"CAUTHEN"

The Family In England

The story of our family begins in northern England on the edge of the weirdly beautiful moors of Yorkshire. From there in the year 1635 the youth, Richard Cawthorne II, a son of Richard Cawthorne I, set out for London to seek his fortune. He had a successful career in London. Later his eldest son, Richard Cawthorne III, sailed from England to settle in the Colony of Virginia in America. Now after 300 years descendants are scattered over the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific. During this time the form and spelling of the name has changed somewhat - from Cawthorne to Cauthorn and then to CAUTHEN. Enmeshed and woven into the fabric of our country's development, the lives of these Cauthen descendants form the subject of a book by Marylin Cauthen Westenhaver entitled "The Cauthen Family History", which was published in 1980.

Ten generations are but a short period in the story of mankind, yet today we live across an almost unbridgeable gulf from the lives and thought of that time because the modes and implements of the lives have changed so greatly. But PEOPLE with their ambitions, frailties, passions, and search for happiness have not changed. The motivations that moved them are the same as those that move us today, and perhaps their lives and deeds will give us more insight into our own lives and problems and help us build well for the years to come.

Richard Cawthorn the IV, born in Virginia ca 1674 and died in Essex Co., VA in 1748. He had six sons and two daughters. Richard Cauthorn V; Thomas Cauthorn; William Cauthorn; Henry Cauthorn; Vincent Cauthorn; James Cauthorn; Cathrerine Cauthorn; and Ann Cauthorn.

James Cauthorn was born in Essex Co., VA ca 1725; died ca 1805 in Warren Co., NC. He had eleven children, eight sons and 3 daughters. Of the eight sons, three were Revolutionary War Patriots. Thomas, James and William.

William Cauthorn was born 1760, died 1836 in Lancaster Co., SC. William Cauthorn is my 4th great grandfather. The Cauthen name is well respected throughout the south and it was once said that the Cauthen men were either Bankers or Baptist Ministers.
