The Barber Family

Featured on this website are the findings from research into my Cambridgeshire Barber family: 1589-1999.

My own small branch of the Barber clan is from the Ely area of Cambridgeshire, England. The family has moved around in such a small radius over the recorded 400 years that they tended to return to villages generations after they had left them. The last Barber in my direct line of descent is my Grandmother - Pamela Maude Barber - the only child of Ernest Herbert Barber (1902-1985) and his wife Maude Yarrow (1899-present day).

Ernest Herbert Barber was the first child of my Gt Gt Grandmother's - Louisa Barber (1881-1974). He was born outside of marriage in Witchford, Cambridgeshire. Louisa then went on to marry Witchford land owner Flanders Hopkin (1854-1910) who was a lot older than herself. She had four further children with him. After his death, Louisa remarried in 1914 to John Pope (1880-1957) of Grunty Fen, Cambridgeshire who was roughly the same age. John and Louisa had two children - the first was a daughter named Audrey (1919) who was strangled at birth by the Umbillical Cord. The following year they had another daughter of the same name.

Louisa's parents were called Reuben Barber (1849-1931)and Elizabeth Dewsbury (1851-1923) and they married on 25th November 1871 at Littleport church, Cambridgeshire. They then went on to have at least 12 children -the first in 1872 and the last one 25 years later in 1897. They appear on the census of 1881 at Welney, Cambridgeshire with four of their children but move from Welney by the time of the 1891 census to Southery, which is where Lousia Barber went to school.

The family are recorded in Littleport on many occasions and it would appear that a lot of the generations were either born there or in the small nearby village of WitchamWitcham Parish Church. Modern day descendents of the Littleport Barbers still live in Littleport and 'The Littleport Society' holds many records of the family as well as baptism, marriage and burial transcripts.
