Boulter

My Boulter connection is via my Gt Gt Grandmother - Elizabeth Boulter, a seamstress who was born in Wentworth, Cambridgeshire in 1854. She was the eldest child of at least seven children of Robert Boulter and Mary Ann Moden of Wentworth. In 1874 she had a son called John C. Dewey with John Freeman Dewey (my Gt Gt Grandfather) and later married him at Wentworth church (pictured below) in December 1878. They had several further children - the youngest of which was my Gt Grandfather.

Having looked at the 1881 census indexes for Cambridgeshire and studying the surname of Boulter it would appear that the name was in decline. There are only 10 Boutlers living in the county of Cambridgeshire in 1881. Seven of these are definite relatives (one of which appears as a servant in Ely) and the other three were living in another village called Chatteris and I have not been able to place them in the tree as yet. It is believed that the Boulter name may be of Welsh origin. Contacts found in Wales point their Boulter relatives back to Bristol at that time. Where did the Boulter name come from and where has it gone?
