The Freeman Family Web-Site.

My Freeman family first appear to me in Coveney, Cambridgeshire which is a small village, West of Little Downham in the fenland surrounding the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire.

The earliest that my research has got me back to is to my Gt Gt Gt Gt Grandfather - John Freeman who was a farmer at Coveney, Cambridgeshire. He married a Mary (of whose surname I do not know) and they had several children. I believe that my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother - Mary Ann Freeman was the oldest of these children and she was born in 1837, apparently in Prickwillow which is about 4 miles North-East from Ely Station. The family appear on the 1851 Census for Wardy Hill, Coveney, as follows:

name status age occupation birthplace
John Freeman h/m 37 yrs Agricultural Labourer Soham
Mary Freeman w/m 35 yrs - Ely, St. Marys.
Elizebeth Freeman d/- 12 yrs Scholar Soham
George Freeman s/- 11 yrs Scholar Witchford
John Freeman s/- 9 yrs Scholar Witchford
James Freeman s/- 7 yrs Scholar Coveney
Phoebe Freeman d/- 4 yrs - Coveney
Sarah Freeman d/- 2 yrs - Coveney
Charles Freeman s/- 3 mths - Coveney

I believe that the above John Freeman (snr) was the son of a John and Phoebe Freeman who also appear on the same census for Coveney with the rest of their family but at the current time I do not have any solid evidence to support this.

Connected families include:

Cross of Ely, Cambridgeshire

Moden of Coveney and Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Seymour of Ely and Witchford, Cambridgeshire.
