Cross
Welcome to my CROSS family tree website.
The Cross family of Ely, Cambridgeshire
My earliest ancestor that I have as recorded is a Thomas
Cross and his wife Ann, my 9xGt
Grandparents, of Ely, Cambridgeshire.
Their Gt Gt
Grandson, Philip Cross married Sarah
Freeman and they had at least nine children -two of whom
emigrated to Australia - Ephrain and Eli
Cross. One of the eldest of their nine children was my
Gt Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, Jacob Cross who was
married to Mary Ann Newell of Ely. George
Cross, one of their sons, married Vine Taylor
and it appears that they only had two children - my Gt Gt
Grandmother - Mary Ann Cross who was born on
20th July 1870 in Buggs
Hill, Ely. The other
child being called Susan Cross who was baptised
in 1872 but it would appear that she died sometime shorly
afterwards. The name 'Buggs Hill' was a common name for Cambridge Road leading into Ely from the
South West. Mary Ann was baptised in St. Mary's Church, Ely in the August of 1870.
By the time of the 1881 Ely Census, George (30yrs), Vine
(28yrs) and Mary Ann Cross (10yrs) were living in "St. John's
Place" and no other children were featured in this
family at that time.
Mary Ann married my Gt Gt Grandfather - Edward Moden on 2nd August 1890 at St. Mary's Church in Ely. The couple lived then in Barton Road where they had six children. Mary and Edward named my Gt Grandmother after Mary's deceased infant sister - Susan. Mary Ann opened a shop on the corner of Barton Road and Cambridge Road and worked there for nearly 40 years with the help of her daughters, Mary, Grace, Vine and Susan. The shop closed down in the mid 1980's, no longer being in the ownership of the family and was converted into a house about 10 years ago.

The Cross Family History Society
To contact the CROSS FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY then please write to:
Mrs. Pam McClymont, PO Box 539, Cooroy, Queensland, 4563, AUSTRALIA.
This was recommended to me for my Ely, Cambridgeshire research. The society has a lot of information and it is well worth contacting Pam if you have Cambridgeshire or Australian CROSS ancestors...
big thanks to Lyn Kirkland for putting me in touch with Pam McClymont at the Cross Family History Society who has more than doubled my CROSS family tree - thank you.
