NOTE on Thomas Babb: Thomas obtained a land grant to 600 acres of land in Frederick County, Virginia, on 11/12/1735. Since there was a requirement that three acres out of every fifty be under cultivation within the next three years, he sent his sons Thomas and Phillip to occupy the land and they became prominent men in the Quaker community around Winchester, Virginia.
At his death, Thomas willed the home place in Delaware to his son Peter. His sons Thomas and Phillip were left the land they were caring for in Virginia
Thomas, Sr's children were
1 Peter
2 - Thomas, Jr. - born 1697 in New Castle, De.; died 10/01/1760 in Frederick Co., Va.

Continuing with my line, Thomas BABB, Jr. was born in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle, Delaware. He had a governor's license to marry and was married in Holy Trinity Church (Old Swedes Church) at Wilmington, Delaware 6/26/1729. (I have visited this lovely old church.) His wife Sarah, born 1708 in Chester, Pa.; died 1764 was the daughter of William Foulk and Elizabeth Cope of Bethel Township. Tax records indicate that Thomas owned property in Bethel Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1730.
Not long after his marriage there was a movement of Quakers from Pennsylvania to Frederick County, Virginia. Thomas went with these Quakers and was one of the founding fathers of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting north of Winchester in Frederick County. This was in 1734.
His father had a land grant of 600 acres on Apple Pie Ridge, near Babb's Run, northwest of Winchester. Thomas settled there and was joined by his brother, Phillip. At his father's death they inherited this land.
Thomas died 11/04/1760. His will was proved 11/04/1760. He left the home place to his son, Sampson, and other bequest to his other children. His wife, not being mentioned, is believed to have already died.
The children of Thomas BABB, Jr. and Sarah Foulk were:
1 - Joseph
2 - Thomas
3 - Stephen
4 - Elizabeth
5 - Sampson
6 - Philip
7 - Peter
The first lovely old home belonging to Thomas was called "The Great Marsh Plantation", now known as The Babb-Purcell-Janney House. It dates to 1735. Great Marsh is located on the north side of route 673 between route 522 and the Apple Pie Ridge Road in Frederick, Virginia.
The second home named "The Brick House" is a lovely old brick mansion and dates also to 1735. It is located west of the Apple Pie Ridge Road and south of route 672 on Babb's Run. This is also in Frederick, Virginia.
My line continues with Joseph BABB who married Mary McCool. Mary provided stores and lodging to our soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Those who are interested, may join DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) on Mary's service.
She was the daughter of James McCool b. in Ireland, and emigrated in 1725. He married Ann Wright. Mary "Polly" McCool was married first to Eldridge Fuller and married secondly to Joseph Babb.
Joseph was disowned by the Quakers for marrying out of unity. He moved his family to the Piedmont section of South Carolina settling in what is now the lower part of Laurens County. On 11/24/1767, Joseph received a grant to 250 acres of land on Beaver Dam Creek, and on 7/3/1868, Mary was given a certificate of membership in the Bush River Monthly Meeting (Quaker) which was situated about four miles from what is now the Laurens-Newberry County Line.
Joseph died in 1843. It is not known where his grave is located. Mary's will is on record in the Lauren's County Court House. She is buried in the Babb-Kellett Cemetery in lower Laurens County. Mary was disowned by the Quakers on 4/28/1792. No reason was given, but it is presumed it was for remaining in South Carolina when the Quakers left the state. It could also have been due to her participation in the American Revolution.
The children of Joseph BABB and Mary were:
1 - Abner abt. 1763-9/18/1847 m. Martha Kellett
2 - Thomas abt. 1764-1801 m. Mary Kellett

8 - Martin born aft. 1761

10- James born aft. 1761 m. Elizabeth Crisp (or Craig)
My line cotinues with Sampson BABB 8/11/1766 to 12/5/1851 who married Anna Kellett born in Craven County, N.C. in 1772 and died at Babb Town in Laurens, S. C. area on 1/19/1838. She was the daughter of Joseph Kellett and Jeanette Jane, b. abt. 1740; d. bef. 12/30/1826 in Laurens County, S.C. Sampson may have been born in Frederick County,Virginia. If not, he was the first of Joseph's children to be born in South Carolina.
Sampson married the youngest daughter of Joseph Kellett who came to the vicinity of Laurens County, South Carolina, from Craven County, North Carolina about the same time that Joseph came from Virginia. The two Josephs were very close.
Sampson and Anna were both buried in the Babb-Kellett Cemetery in Laurens County, South Carolina. Sampson left a will which is on record, in which he refers to his daughter Anna as Polly.
