John Craig was an elder in the Presbyterian Church at Pricetown (Milton Twp., Mahoning Co) Ohio. He moved to Deerfield township, Portage Co OH, where he owned 2 acres of lots 17 and 41 acres of lots 7 and 8. Jane died at the home of her daughter, Mary Ann Stanley, in Hastings, Barry Co, Michigan.

In the 1820 census there is an elderly female living with John and his family. There was also James Craig who lived in Milton Twp who was possibly a brother to John. After his death at an early age, his widow and family moved to Michigan.

Catherine_____. 09 Oct. 1853, Ross Co., OH. Catherine deserted Charles in 1816 She co-habited with a William Pool. Charles had the two arrested and they were taken to court. The case was later dropped and a Catherine Creigh m. William Pool in 1817.

My first Charles is suspected of having a brother Alexander Craig, m. to Sarah. Unconfirmed.

All Craig and Ashby information graciously submitted to me by Caroline, MDShaper of Ohio. She also gave me partial data on Nancy Craig and her first marriage to Thomas Simpson. Accuracy in some of the Craig and Ashby material has not been confirmed.

My Great Grandfather Patrick Craig was born 1833 in Ireland and immigrated to this America in 1864. Four years later Patrick married Miss Margaret Kelly and they lived in Marshall County, IL for 43 years until his death. Patrick was very proud of his Irish Catholic heritage.

Married Asa Branson in Callaway County, Missouri - 16 February 1860. Elizabeth met Asa Branson while he boarded at her aunt and uncle's home. Elizabeth and Asa Branson are living with a family named Paden in Callaway County, Missouri in the 1860 Missouri census.

They leave Missouri - go to Belmont County, Ohio then to Coal Creek, Iowa. Asa and a Craig gentleman own Branson and Craig store - I have no first name for Mr. Craig

Listed below is another Craig family that was in the Fayette/Montgomery County, IL area at the same time. In this family there was also a son, William Craig, who married Jane Wilson, a sister to my Harriet H. Wilson. For some time it was thought that the two William Craig's were the same person (having married both Wilson daughters). In researching Federal census it was found that two families of William Craig's showed up--one with wife's name, Jane, and one with wife's name, Harriet. The reason I have listed this family is that I am sure there must be a connection between my William Craig and the Craig family listed below (I hope) but to date none has been found. THE SECOND CRAIG FAMILY

The Craig Family originally lived in Scotland. During the time of the Reformation, about 1690-1700, they moved to Northern Ireland. They were Protestants. The first individual we know by name is ROBERT CRAIG. In 1800, ROBERT CRAIG, SR. was at seaboard ready to emigrate to America. The homeland ties were too strong and he remained in Ireland. A nineteen year old son insisted upon sailing--this was THOMAS CRAIG. The father persuaded another and older son, ROBERT CRAIG, JR. to accompany his brother. Soon after they landed in one of the Carolinas, the brothers were separated and nothing more is known of Robert Craig, Jr.

THOMAS CRAIG was born in Ireland 02 Mar 1782 of Scotch-Irish descent; died 27 Mar 1840, Hurricane Township, Fayette County, IL; buried in the Craig Cemetery that was on his land. He lived in Carolina, Tennessee and Illinois. On board ship, while crossing the Atlantic, Thomas met and married an Irish girl named Margaret, last name unknown. In 1837 Thomas moved to Fayette County, IL with his son Allen and his family.

2. Robert Wiley CRAIG. Born on 19 Jan 1781 in VA. Robert Wiley died in Edgar Co. on 5 Sep 1848; he was 67. Buried in Swango Cemetery, Swango Station, 5.5 M. SW Of Paris, IL. Occupation: Served In War Of 1812.

Religion: Masonic Fraternity, Universalist Church.

 

"The Nickell family has been vital in tracing the Craig family line. We know for sure that Robert Craig, born 1781, was married in 1804 to Elizabeth Nickell, born 1784--I have a copy of the marriage bond(Union,Monroe Co., WV) that includes Elizabeth's father's name on it: Isaac Nickell. We also know where these two ancestors(Robt./Eliz.) are buried(Illinois).

Robert Craig's father has yet to be truly proven. Most agree his name was William Craig. But, this is where the fun begins. One group of researchers believe William Craig's wife to be an Elizabeth Nickell, born 1748--sister to your Thomas and my Isaac Nickell. That would make Robert Craig and Elizabeth Nickell(b.1784) first cousins! Another group of researchers believe William Craig's wife to be Jane Anderson Allen. She was the widow of Hugh Allen who was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant. Sgt. William Craig was at that battle. So was Isaac Nickell. It is possible both groups of researchers may be correct. William Craig may have been married to both women at different times.

A footnote to the Battle of Point Pleasant: Capt. Evan Shelby and several of his sons were at that battle. One son, named, Isaac Shelby, would later become the first governor of Kentucky. And, he was also my Robert Craig's commander in the War of 1812."

"Robert Craig was born in 1781, and was but a lad when his parents moved to Kentucky. He was reared on a farm and within the confines of Strode Fort, to which his father at one time removed for protection from the Indians. He recieved the advangages of a good English education, and remained in the Blue Grass regions until 1828, in the meantime being bred to farming persuits. He carried on agriculture several years, then sold out, and coming to Clark County, this state [IL], purchased a quarter section of Government land upon which he built a log house, and proceeded with its improvement and cultivation until 1842. Thence he removed to Edgar County, where he remained until his death in 1847.

"His wife also died the same year. Robert Craig was a stanch Democrat, politically and served as a soldier int he war of 1812. He was one of the first to identify himself with the Masonic Fraternity , and was also connected with the Universalist Chruch. His wife, Elizabeth, was a Baptist.

"Robert and Elizabeth moved to Kentucky and located at Licking River, Montgomery, Co. sometime before 1810. He served in the War of 1812 and was in the Battle of Thames, in which Chief Tecumseh was killed. Robert first saw what is now edgar County, Illinois on his trip north from Kentucky to Canada to fight the Battle of Thames. He rode a white horse named "Selim".

They moved north and settled in what was then called Clark County, IL (the Paris, IL area) in 1828. Robert's farm was located along State Hwy # 1, Edgar Co, five miles south of Paris, IL at the foot of long hill. He became a prominent and reliable citizen of this locality and his original home, a log house, stood until about 1940.

In 1804 when Robert Wiley was 22, he married Elizabeth NICKLES, daughter of Isaac NICKELL (31 Mar 1751-1 Oct 1839) & Margaret CURRY (1751-1839), in Union, Monroe Co., WV.174 Born in 1784 in Greenbriar Co, (W)VA. Elizabeth died in Edgar Co. on 4 May 1848; she was 64.

3. William Daniel (II) CRAIG.56 Born on 13 Oct 1804 in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co. KY. William Daniel (II) died in Edgar Co., IL on 22 Feb 1874; he was 69.79 Buried in Swango Cemetery, Sims Twp, Edgar Co. IL. Occupation: Farmer.

On 25 Dec 1823 when William Daniel (II) was 19, he married Rosanna DAY, daughter of Peter DAY, in Morgan Co, KY. Born on 31 Jan 1808 in Greenbriar Co, VA (Now WV). Rosanna died in Swango Cemetery, Sims Twp, Edgar, IL ? 5 Feb 1848; she was 40.

"William Craig remained in Kentucky until he was about twenty-four years of age, residing at the homestead until he was nineteen. His marriage took place on Christmas Day of 1823, an event which was attended by great festivities. The house was decorated for the occasion, and the young people for miles around assembled to congratulate their young friends and partake of the old-time Kentucky hospitality and cheer. The bride, Rosana Day was born in 1809 in Greenbrier Co., now West Virginia, and was the daughter of Peter Day.

"After his marriage, William Craig cleared and improved a tract of timber land, and engaged in farming and stock-raising. The arduous work involved in this task proved too great a strain upon his immature physical strength, and nearly resulted in breaking down his health. After remaining on the farm five years, he sold out his property in Kentucky and came to Illinois, where he purchased eighty acres of timber land in Edgar County, five miles south of Paris, at $1.25 per acre. He cleared and improved this place, adding to his property as he was prospered in business, until he acquired an estate containing about 500 acres, and made his home there, carrying on a successful farming business until 1854. He then sold this property and moved to donica point. He met with an accident while moving to this place which came very near resulting totally; he was thrown from his wagon, sacks of grain falling on him, and it was some time before he was extracted, almost exhausted with cold and suffering. He purchased a large farm containing 460 acres, and made his permanent home there. His death occurred in February, 1874. His wife died March 3, 1848.

"She was a kind mother and loving wife."

"Mr. Craig was active and energetic in business throughout his live, although never strong physically. His health was injured by privation and exposure while serving in the Black Hawk War, and still further impaired by an attack of measles, and he was obliged to struggle against much physical suffering and infirmity. He was a leading member of the Old-School Baptist Church, and was always active in promoting the best interests of the community. In politics he was a Democrat. His last wife is living at the old home place at aged seventy-five." p. 531

"William Craig, . . . as a young man emigrated with his wife from Kentucky to Edgar County, Ill., making the trip on a pack-horse. He entered land from the Government there, and afterwards made a number of moves, but continued to reside in that county until his death. On coming to Edgar County the Indians were still to be met in large numbers, and he served as a soldier during the Black Hawk War. He was one of the first settlers of the county, where horses were so scarce that when he wished to do team work he would borrow his neighbor's horse to work with his own, while when his neighbor needed the like assistance, he loaned his own animal in turn. Their trading was done at Chicago, where they would travel by ox-team with a load of apples, which they would exchange for groceries, while their principal source of income came from hunting and digging ginseng root."

Hi! I was reading through my messages and have found my great-great-great grandfather in the message from Pat Taylor. It is concerning the "SECOND CRAIG FAMILY" and particularly, Windsor P. Craig. Please read through this whole message before disregarding the information!

The following may be of interest to those with Craig and other ancestors inKansas. It is taken from the Fredonia Daily Herald dated October 11, 1940. I will only include an excerpt here. The article is entitled, "Jerome Greathouse is 83," and tells of Jerome's life as a pioneer of Kansas.

"In the fall of 1859 a little band of pioneers driving a mixed ox-team and horse-team caravan migrated from Fayette County, Illinois to Wilson County, Kansas. After several weeks of traveling in which they endured the hardships and privations of pioneer days, they arrived at the Indian village of Neodesha, which was at that time the capitol of the Osage nation. There they consulted with Little Bear, chief of the Osages, who gave them permission to settle north of what is now the Wm. Lamb place north of Fredonia. Consequently, they journeyed northward and in December of 1859 settled along the Verdigris River just below what is now Coyville. Polly Ann Greathouse herself drove a horse team and covered wagon the entire distance, holding her two-year old son, Jerome, on her lap while her husband assisted the other men in looking after the stock. The title to the land was later acquired by means of a patent right signed by President U.S. Grant. Greathouse Branch, a small creek southeast of Coyville, was later named in honor of Warren C. Greathouse."

It continues: "In this little group of early settlers were also Jerome's grandparents, Windsor P. Craig, a Methodist preacher and circuit rider, and his wife, Rachel E. Craig, who is said to have taught the first school in Wilson County in her own home on the place now owned by Sam Neuenschwander. A number of other families whose names are familiar to residents of Wilson County were included in the little group that came to Kansas at that time. Some of those names are Bean, Clinesmith, Connor, Michaels, Shafer, Shoop, Williams and perhaps others."
