Collecting Snakes
Why do some people enjoy collecting and owning snakes? If
you put this question to any snake collector, his answer
will usually be that snakes are fascinating,
always-interesting animals, that they are clean, and that
they are not demanding as pets. Some young people get into
snake-collecting because they enjoy shocking their parents
or friends with their off-beat hobby. Compared to
collecting something totally harmless such as stamps,
snakes seem more exciting. Some people simply enjoy the
fliration with danger that snake-collecting offers. The
more experienced a collector becomes, however, the less
danger is involved, since he or she becomes more adept at
capturing and handling the venomous species. There are, of
course, some individuals who appear to deliberately handle
venomous snakes in a reckless manner. Some of these unusual
individuals have been bitten many times and seem to enjoy
the notoriety that comes from surviving the bites of
different venomous species.(It takes all kinds to make a
world!) Many students, biologists and naturalists collect
snakes in a spirit of genuine scientific interest. Anyone
who has a sincere enthusiasm for biology, nature or the
outdoors soon learns that snakes are an integral part of
our environment and generally harmless, except to those
people who go looking for trouble.
