The Eyes Tell It

In Florida, the eyes of all non-venomous snakes have round pupils. The Venomous Eastern Coral Snake also has round pupils. The pupils of the five Florida venomous pit vipers are vertical slits. This is by no means the only way to distinguish venomous from non-venomous species, and it is not the safest way since it requires rather close inspection.
