Can A Water Moccasin Bite Underwater?

The answer is yes, but because of water resistance, it cannot strike in its usual manner. If grabbed or stepped on in the water, the Cottonmouth would probably bite in self-defense. If it is in the water and swimmers are thashing around noisily nearby, it will try to swim away. But moccasins are not a problem in most swimming holes because they do not like clear, open rivers and lakes.
