Mexican Yarn Art

This craft is found in the Brownie Handbook on page 188. The girls had a hard time doing the activity the way it is in the book, so I changed it a little. And this is what we did.

Materials you will need:

Cut different colors of the yarn into pieces long enough to cover the wood plaque either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Make sure you leave the yarn a 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer than the plaque. Cover the plaque with a thin layer of glue. Place the yarn side by side each other on the plaque. Let dry for about 10-15 minutes. Then acrefully cut the excess yarn off. And there is your yarn art.

Paper Chains

Materials needed:

Cut strips of paper and link together with glue or tape. Decorate before you link them together if you like.

Bean Name

Materials needed:

Draw the girls name on the posterboard using thick letters. Apply glue on the first letter and have the girls place the beans on the glue. Continue with each letter until they are finished.

Name Wall Hanging

Materials needed:

Cut the posterboard into circles. One circle per letter in the girls' name. Have the girls write one letter of their name on center of each circle. Then have them decorate with other drawings. Examples: balloons, stars, shapes, flowers. Hole punch the top and the bottom of each letter. This should be done before the meeting. Thread the yarn through each circle keeping space between each letter. Tape the back so the circles won't slide.

Paper Mosaic

Materials needed:

Cut the construction paper into different sizes and shapes. Separate the colors onto the paper plates. Cut the posterboard or thin cardboard into a 5x7 or 8x10 piece. Draw a frame around the border. And draw a simple picture in the center of the cardboard. Have the girls draw the picture. But have some examples so they aren't too detailed. Examples: flower, star, sun, house. Paint small areas of the picture with glue and place the cut pieces of paper onto the glue. Overlap the pieces to give it the mosaic look.

Spin Art

Materials needed:

Poke a hole through the center of the paper plate with the pencil. Place the paper plate on the record player with the hole over the spoke that holds the records on. Player the record player on 45 speed and have the girls place a marker on the plate to make a design. Use different colors. When finished turn the record player off and look at the design.

Shadow Box Designs

Materials needed:

Glue a piece of construction paper to the bottom of the box lid. Glue the items any way on the construction paper. Use markers for details if needed. Stretch the plastic wrap over the box lid and tape in place.

Fingerprint Paintings

Materials needed:

Spread the newspaper out in front of the girls. Place a little bit of different colors of paint on the paper plates for each girl. Have the girls dip their finger in the paint and press onto the paper. Make the details with the marker. Examples: cat, dog, flower, caterpillar, sun, the possibilities are endless. The fingerprint should be the main part of the object.

Celebrity Mobile

Materials needed:

Cut stars out of the construction paper. Cut the pictures into circles. Glue the pictures onto the stars. Use the optional items to decorate the outline of the stars and the pictures. Hole punch the top of the stars and tie a piece of yarn through the hole. Hole punch the paper plate in the places where the pictures will be tied. Have the yarn lengths different sizes. Also make a hanger out of a piece of yarn to be tied on either side of the plate.

Holiday Placemat

Materials needed:

Trace a place setting onto the construction paper. Decorate for the holiday you are doing it for. When they are done cover with the contact paper.
