Thinking Day

Thinking Day 2000

This year for Thinking Day we learned about Canada. We compared Canada's Promise to ours and our motto to theirs and we also compared their law to ours. And this is what we found out:

Our Promise and Motto and Law

Their Promises and Mottos and Laws

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Guide Promise

I promise that I will do my best,
To be true to myself, my God and Canada;
I will help others,
And to accept the Guiding Law.

Brownie Guide Promise

I promise to do my best,
To be true to myself, my God, and Canada;
I will help other people,
And keep the Brownie Law.

Spark Guide Promise

I promise to share and be a friend.

Be Prepared

Girl Guide Motto

Be Prepared

Brownie Motto

Lend a Hand

I will so my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,

and to

respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Girl Guide Law

The Guiding Law Challenges me to:
1. be honest and trustworthy
2. use my resources wisely
3. respect myself and others
4. recognize and use my talents and abilities
5. protect our common environment
6. live with courage and strength
7. share in the sisterhood of Guiding.

Brownie Guide Law

As a Brownie
I am honest and kind;
I help take care
of the world around me.

We also played the following games that came from Canada.

Camouflage

The leader stands in an open central spot and covers her eyes for five minutes. During this time the players all hide, but they must beable to see the leader from their hiding place. A signal is given and the leader opens her eyes, Without moveing from her place (although she can turn around), she must see how many hiders she can spot.

International Shopping

Depending on how many girls are in your troop you divide them into groups with one girl being the shopper (I had the shoppers pick the team they wanted). Move the groups in different places of the meeting area. The shoppers than go see the game leader and receive a list of items that are found in a store. The shoppers than go back to their group and act out the items that are on the list. The first group that guesses the items first correctly wins.

The items we had on our list were:

apple
milk
cereal
soap
corn on the cob
bread
pop tart
baby food

You can come up with your own items if you wish.

We also had the following snacks from Canada.

Super Baked Apples

1 apple each
butterscotch chips
minimarshmellows
foil

Remove the core of the apple carefully and set it in a square of foil, then fill the cavity with butterscotch and marshmellows. Wrap the apple in the foil and bake in the oven on 350 degrees for 30 minutes. You can also make these in a campfire. Have them cooke in the fire for about 10-30 minutes.

Come and Get 'Em Cookies

2 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups shredded coconut
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup milk

Cover a cookie sheet with a piece of wax paper. In a large bowl, stir the oats, cocoa, coconut, and vanilla together. In a meduim sauce pan over meduim heat, stir the sugar, butter, and milk until it bubbles. Let it cook for 5 minutes, then pour it over the first mixture. Stir well, then cool for 3 minutes. Drop the dough by teaspoonfuls onto the cookie sheet. Refrigerate or freeze until cookies harden.
