PUBLIC-SPIRITED VANCOUVER MAN IS PARALYSIS VICTIM -
Resident of City for 38 Years and Largest Taxpayer in County. -

"VANCOUVER, Wash. June 8 - (Special) - Thousands of residents of
Vancouver and Clarke county mourn today for Edson M. Rowley, one
of the most prominent, popular and public-spirited men in
southwestern Washington, is dead, having passed away at 8:30 this
morning from a stroke of paralysis which he suffered May 13. At
the time of his death and for several years past, Mr. Rowley was
the heaviest individual taxpayer in Clarke county. He is a
brilliant example of a poor boy, securing his own education and
with eternal optimism and hard work, reaching a place of
affluence and prominence in his own community.
"Mr. Rowley was born in Duchess county, New York, June 3, 1860,
so celebrated his 59th birthday a few days ago, while in bed.
Securing the necessary qualifications, Mr. Rowley entered the law
department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and was
graduated with high honors in March, 1884. The name of the late
J. B. Angell, for so many years president of that institution, is
on the diploma he received when he was graduated. While at the
university he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and always
maintained a keen interest in it.
"Coming to Vancouver 38 years ago, he saw here what he thought
the ideal site of a great city, and he decided to locate here
permanently. Later he went into the real estate business.
During his life he handled no less than 13 additions to this
city. He was progressive always and stood for public
improvements. A few years ago the property assessments he paid
for one year amounted to nearly $20,000, for pavement, sidewalks,
curbs and sewers. He served on the city council at different
times with unselfish motives and keen foresight for the civic
welfare of Vancouver, which he boosted year in and year out.
Even in trying hard times, he never lost faith in this city's
great future and when the great industrial growth started here
two years ago with the building of the shipyards, and other
important industries, he was seeing fulfilled his life's dream.
He looked forward to seeing a city here of 50,000 people before
1930. He was in the prime of life, only 59 and active.
"At the end Mr. Rowley was surrounded by his family, his wife,
Mrs. Mabel A. Rowley; daughters, Mrs. Vivian Dart and Mrs.
Genevieve Holder, both of Portland, and Louise Rowley, aged 7.

"Mr. Rowley was a member of Vancouver commandery, Knights
Templar, No. 10, and Mount Hood lodge, No. 32. The funeral will
be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, June 10. Rev. A. H.
Thompson, pastor of the First Methodist church, will conduct the
services at the home, Tenth and B streets, and the Knights
Templar in full regalia will form an escort to the Columbia river
interstate bridge and will accompany the body to the Portland
crematorium, where they will hold their impressive ritualistic
services."

"A memorial service for Orby M. Rowley of Gresham will be at 10
a.m. Wednesday at Bateman Funeral Chapel. Private burial was at
Skyline Memorial Gardens.
"Mrs. Rowley died Saturday in a Gresham hospital. She was 90.
"She was born in Hardy, Neb., on Feb. 8, 1897. She had lived
in Joes, Colo., until moving to Gresham in 1943.
"Mrs. Rowley married Charles Kuffler on April 24, 1915. He
died on May 5, 1962. She married Ernest Rowley on Nov. 24, 1963.
He died on June 2, 1974.
"She was a member of Wood Village Baptist Church.
"Survivors include her son, O. Gerald Kuffler, Tygh Valley;
daughters, Charlotte Walt, Manzanita, and Vera Eichler,
Troutdale; stepsons, Nial Rowley, Gresham, and Willard Rowley,
Portland; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
"The family suggests remembrances be contributions to Wood
Village Baptist Church."

"Oscar A. Rowley, a Portland resident since 1918, died in a
local nursing home Tuesday at age 78.
"Mr. Rowley, who was born in St. Helens, last resided at 6128
N. Denver Ave.
"Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Killingsworth Little
Chapel of the Chimes, followed by vault interment in Skyline
Memorial Gardens.
"Survivors include his wife, Ada; son, Duane, Washougal, Wash.;
daughters, Eleanor Bieker, Beaverton, and Shirley Archer, Tacoma,
Wash.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
"The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the
Oregon Kidney Association or to the Heart Fund."

"Many Attend Celebration of Golden Affair -

"CHRISTMAS and a golden wedding were celebrated alike by Mr. and
Mrs. P. C. Rowley on December 25, at their home 11 miles east of
Lebanon. Mr. Rowley is 73 years old, and his wife is 72. They
were married in Manchester, Iowa, 50 years ago on December 23,
two days before Mrs. Rowley's 21st birthday. Later they migrated
by wagon train, then back to Iowa, and from Iowa west to the
vicinity of what is now Troutdale. They remained on their ranch
there for 15 years, and then went into Washington wheat country
near Mabton, and from there to Lebanon, where they now reside.
They are in good health and are prospering on their ranch of 300
acres.
"Twenty-one guests were present at the celebration: A daughter,
Ollie Rowley, Lebanon; Esther Belieu, a daughter, and her
husband, B. O. Belieu, and their children George and Robert of
Portland; Mrs. Pauline Caldwell and her husband, E. L. Caldwell,
of Bordeaux, Wash.; Hugh Rowley and his wife, Mildred Rowley,
with their children Myrth, Esther, Richard, Vernon and Verna of
Lebanon. Charles Rowley, a brother of P. C. Rowley, with his
wife, Mary Rowley, and daughter May, and Fredrick Franklin were
also present."

ROWLEY, Ralph A. (1843 - 1919)
"Ralph A. Rowley, old-time resident of Medford, Or., died
October 31 in (the?) city as a result of injuries (received?) in
an accident caused by the (car?) he was driving. Mr. Rowley was
76 years old.
"Mr. Rowley was well known as a soldier, missionary, miner and
farmer. He came to the state in 1894. He was born in New York
state and served in the civil war as a Massachusetts volunteer.
He was a graduate of the Boston theological seminary and served
as pastor of a number of eastern churches.
"Mr. Rowley is survived by his widow, Isabella, one son, Arthur
Rowley of Medford, and one daughter, Mrs. John Richdale of San
Francisco."

Funeral to Be Held Tomorrow Afternoon -
"Margaret S. Rowley, 47, wife of Ray W. Rowley, 1726 Southeast
Twenty-second avenue, died yesterday. The funeral will be held
at 2:30 P. M., Thursday, in the chapel of Edward Holman & Son,
with burial in Lincoln Memorial park.
"Mrs. Rowley was a native of Winona, Minn. She came to
Portland 30 years ago and was married 22 years ago to Mr. Rowley,
who survives her. Other survivors are their daughter, Margaret
May Rowley, and Mrs. Rowley's brothers and sisters, Ann Piering,
Duluth, Minn.; Mrs. Mary Fifer, Mrs. Christine Holt and William
Murtinger of Portland, and Edward N. Murtinger of Pullman, Wash."

"WILLIAM S. ROWLEY -
"Rosary for retired truck driver William Sherman Rowley, 55,
who died from a heart attack Saturday in a Milwaukie hostpial,
will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Peake Memorial Chapel,
Milwaukie.
"Mr. Rowley, of 15717 SE Oatfield Road, Milwaukie, was born
June 3, 1915, in Portland and lived in Portland until 1947, when
he moved to Milwaukie.
"He was a truck driver for Milwaukie Lumber Co. for 22 years
until his retirement late last year due to ill health. He was a
member of the Milwaukie Elks Lodge, the Teamsters Union, the
Multnomah Anglers and St. John's Catholic Church, Milwaukie.
"Survivors include his wife, Marguerite; one daughter, Mrs.
Jacqueline Susan Heim of Milwaukie; two brothers, Boyd H. Rowley
of Sandy and Lloyd Rowley of Portland; four sisters, Mrs. Addie
Beck of Springfield, Mrs. Velma Tevepaugh of Creswell, Mrs.
Nadine Woods of Garden Grove, Calif., and Mrs. Oveada Hunt of
Sacramento.
"Requiem Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. John's
Catholic Church. Vault interment will be in Willamette National
Cemetery."
