Joseph Brown was born on 20 October 1829 in Pennsylvania. He was supposedly the son of Nathaniel Brown and E. Lyland. Joseph married Rachael Ann Wilcox in Jennings Co, IN on 15 September 1850. In the 1850-1870 census' Joseph is listed as a farmer, but in the 1880 census he is listed as the Lenox City Marshal in Taylor Co, IA. In later years in Tonkawa, Oklahoma he owned a second hand store.

Newspaper article:

Wednesday of this week "Uncle Joe" Brown had a birthday, making eighty times he has celebrated that very important event in his career. He says he is 48 years old, but of late years he has been celebrating his birthday on an average of three times a year, and that accounts for the eighty. He says he doesn't want the impression to get out that he is eighty. A big dinner at the home of W.N. Brown, to which twenty eight guests sat down, served to commemorate the event.

My grandmother, Maude Mabel Smith Swalander, had only a few memories of her Grampa Joe. She remembered that he owned the second hand store and that he was in a wheelchair, but she didn't know why. She also remembered him sitting on the porch in a rocking chair.

Joseph died on Christmas Day 1913 in Tonkawa, Kay Co, OK. He was 84 years old. The cause of death on his death certificate is given as paralysis.
