Julia Ann Brown was born in Jennings Co, Indiana on 6 June 1856, to Joseph Brown and Rachael Ann Wilcox. Sometime before 1860 her family moved to Warren Co, Illinois, where they are found in the census for Lenox township. Julia remained here until her marriage to Samuel Martin Smith in Monmouth, Warren Co, IL on 8 January 1874. They spent a few years in Iowa and Missouri and had moved to Kay Co, Oklahoma by 1898.

Julia Ann died in Nardin, Kay Co, Oklahoma on 2 January 1926 and was interred on 4 January 1926 in Prairie View Cemetery, Tonkawa, Kay Co, OK.

An obituary from an unknown newspaper read:

Julia Ann Brown Smith was born June 6, 1856, in Jennings county Idiana, died January 2, 1926, at the home of her son Dale Smith, near Nardin, Oklahoma, at the age of 69 years, six months and 26 days. She united in marriage to Samuel M. Smith at Monmouth, Ill., January 8, 1874, and to this union six children were born, Mrs. Rose Delaney, Creston, Iowa; Maude, who died at the age of 7-years; William and Chalmers Smith, Blackwell; Fred Smith, White City, Kansas, and Dale Smith, Nardin, Oklahoma. Others who mourn her loss are 15 grandchildren, one great grand child, and one brother.

In 1898 she moved with her family to a farm south of Tonkawa, residing in that community until about ten years ago when she came to Blackwell. She was converted in early life and when a young woman joined the Christian church and has lived a Christian life ever since. On coming to Oklahoma she united with the United Brethren church at Prairie View chapel south of Tonkawa, where she remained a faithful member till death.

Speaking of this mother in Israel, Rev. J. J. Carroll said, "I cannot say that she is dead - she is just away. With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand she has wandered into an unknown land and left us dreaming how very [f]air it needs must be, since she [li]ngers there."

Funeral services were held at the United Brethren church at 1:30 p. m. Monday, January 4, with Rev. J. J. Carroll officiating and the tired body was laid to rest in the Tonkawa cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS - We desire to thank our many friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy to us during the sickness and death of our dear mother, grandmother and sister. Also for the beautiful floral offerings and [songs?]. Also Reverend Carroll for his words of kindness. Mrs. Rose Delaney and family, Will Smith and family, Chalmer Smith and family, Fred Smith and family, Dale Smith and family, Clark Brown."
