Communities are starting to see the impact of the WWW. You can
find more and more community
information, services, institutions and their mandates,

In a network project supporting equitable access to computers and related technology including the Internet, there are over 250 community technology centers in the United States, El Salvador, Ireland, Poland, and Scotland. The Hill District in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania created a metropolitan network for free access. People coming to one of the sites at a community center feel comfortable looking up information on the Internet to answer questions they might not ask another person. Michael Massey shows how a Newark , New Jersey neighborhood communicates through a local network. The MUSIC developer Alan Shaw describes that "it is a tool for residents to use in developing local forums and discussions around community concerns, and to organize and manage neighborhood-based programs and social activities." By matching grants to non-profit organizations, the Technology Opportunities Program, formerly TIIAP, encourages coalitions for innovative projects like Newark's. These projects focus on improving work productivity, literacy, education and medical care as they help close the gap between the information "haves" and "have nots" by providing access to inner-city and remote rural communities. This site will provide you with links to the different areas. These links are by no means complete; they will change and will be updated on a regular basis. | |||||||||
