The Welcoming Committee is seeking for advice from experienced dancers and their parents who may have some hot tips for our beginners. What do you know now that would have been helpful when you first started dancing? Tips topics can inlude everything from how to curl your hair for a feis, to what you should do if your shoes are scuffed up. We're looking for anything related to Irish dancing, feisanna, etc. Please pass to tips to class reps. Thanks!
The Newsletter Committee is constantly looking for material to be included in the newsletter. If ou have any information, an interesting story, or photo related to the School or to dancing, feel free to submit it! Deadline for all submissions is the 20th of every month. Don't worry...if it doesn't make it into the next newsletter, chances are it will be in the following one. Also, please include your name with all submissions. If you have an idea for a regular feature, feel free to submit your idea and it will be voted on by the Newsletter Commitee.
If you haven't seen it yet, you will want to look for the documentary "To Dance Irish," produced by WBGU-TV, an Ohio PBS affiliate at Bowling Green University. It's a video which traces the relationship between Irish culture and Irish Dance in America, and as it developed in the Heinzman family and the school. The documentary has been broadcast by WBGU, and they are currently seeking a wider market through the national PBS network. There are a limited number of videos (it runs a little less than 30 minutes) available to schools and other educational organizations. If you are associated, you can get more information through HSID office.
Dr. Lucy Long co-produced the video and edited an accompanying Educational Resource Guide. Lucy is the mother of an HSID dance and spoke at the September Booster Club meeting regarding "To Dance Irish." According to Lucy, another way of seeing the video and increasing its exposure, is to ask your local PBS affiliate to broadcast it. PBS stations are generally responsive to community input, and this show not only offers and educational view f Irish dance, it also demonstrates the value of ethnic traditions in general. Of course, anyone involved in the Heinzman School will especially enjoy watching the Heinzman family along with our dancers and parents. It may time a little time and effort, but we (the Booster Club) encourage you to see this video. It's fun to watch, it's educational, and it's a great way to promote Irish dance and culture.
