Data provided by Arella (Murdoch) Purdum and Harrison E. Mertens "August and Elise came to Premont from Crete, Will County, Illinois in 1910. They came with 9 children, one having died as a baby in Illinois. On Dec. 16, 1912 August purchased a 10 acre tract of land northwest of town, on what was known then as North Rd. , Now is FR West 706. This location being 7/10 of a mile West of US281. The Premont FFA farm is there today. August and Elise had cows for domestic use and August was a skilled carpenter and wood craftsman. He and his sons built many of the larger homes in Premont. He advertised as heavy and general construction work. August operated a sawmill in the H.C. Engelking Lumber Co. yard prior to 1916. Some of the children were schooled in Premont.
