Reflection and Meditation on "The Parable of the Sower"

Bible Reading & Meditation
Matt 13:1-9
On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear."

Reflection:
Jesus goes on in Matt 13: 18-23 with the explanation of this parable. Anyone who shares the word of God is a sower. Our hearts are the soil in which the seed is planted. In the first example, the seed fell on the ground and was taken away by the birds. This represents those hearts that are turned away from God's word and the bird (or evil) comes and takes it away. The second heart has some soil but mostly rocky ground. Because the good soil was not deep the seed sprouted but did not have good roots, and the sun scorched it and it died. The third heart, fell among thorns, it grew but was eventually choked because of the weeds around it. This heart hears the word of God, but the weeds respresent the worldly influence that keep us from bearing the fruits of God's words. Lastly, the fourth heart, has rich soil and all who hear the word, understand it and and live their life according to it.
Sink back into your chair...take deep breaths...inhaling the goodness of God and exhaling the pressure and stress of your day. What kind of "soil" is your heart? How do you accept the Word of God? Does your life show the fruits of your planted seeds? Are you a sower of seeds, do you spread the Good News of Jesus Christ with patience, love and discernment?
I write in my journal any thoughts or feelings I have experienced during this meditation and reflection.

Prayer Focus
