Pack 240 Pinewood Derby Track

The Track surface -
Our track surface incorporates a "Cub Scout blue" formica surface that eliminates any wood grain variation that might occur. Our lanes, a "Cub Scout gold" formica, were professionally cut by a local cabinet company to exact specification. Each and every lane is identical, and by making a fixture to hold each lane in exact position, we were able to secure the lanes in very precise locations, with very little section to section variation. The fixtures themselves were simply slots cut across a board with a dado blade (representing the lane locations) from a piece of cedar (I would recommend pine though) and then the single piece was ripped across the lane positions to create two identical fixtures. I would probably recommend doing three now (like Ron suggested). All that's left to do is find yourself a good point of reference on each track section and line up all lanes according to that point of reference. We assembled our track and placed a single, straight line down the track, and used it as reference throughout the project. The final result was a very straight first lane. The rest of the lanes used the fixtures to mimic the first lane's position. Below is a shot of our track with a few cars headin' to gasoline alley.
