Hosta

(Latin: Hosta)

Hosta is also know as Plantain Lily. They are grown mainly for the unusual leaves which vary in size, shape and markings. The leaves are smooth or ribbed and have solid colours of deep blu-green or are edged with white or yellow. They produce a bell-shaped flower on long stems. Hostas are one of the few hardy perennials that flow in the shade. But watch for slugs whiche at holes in the leaves

Height: 1-2 feet (30-60cm)
Bloom: Seldom, but in late summer
Varieties: many and various
Propagation: Divide plants in spring
Light: Shade
Soil: Grows best in rich well-composted soil
