1998 Gordon ties record with 13th
win
The now Three-time NASCAR
Winston Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon ended the 1998
season at Atlanta Motor Speedway by winning the NAPA 500
and tying Richard Petty's modern-era record for the most
victories in a single season.
Gordon's 13th win this season tied the mark established
in 1975 by Petty. The seven-time series champion
possesses the overall record for wins in a single season
with 27 in 1967. He also won 21 in 1971.
"That's one I certainly never, never thought would
happen," Gordon said about tying the record.
"Coming into this
race, I said we didn't feel like we had a winning race
car, but I felt like we had a good top-five car."
Gordon's 42nd career victory in 189 Winston Cup starts
gave Chevrolet the 1998 Manufacturers Championship by
five points over Ford, 240-235.
