Sherlock--A Loving Memorial

3/10/87 - 8/27/98

Striking the Eskie Pose
My beloved friend and companion Sherlock entered my life in May of 1987 as a 10 week old puppy. It was love at first site when we met. I knew the instant I saw the puppy, he was to be my pal forever.

Sherlock's first bath
Sherlock always loved getting bathed. He especially liked it when I would massage his coat and tell him what a good boy he was--my baby Sherlock.

Sherlock's first time at a Lake
Baby Sherlock always loved the water--but he didn't like to venture must past his knees!

Mommy and Sherlock

Sherlock died unexpectantly on August 27, 1998 at around 7:00 pm. Sherlock was put outside on his leash. My neice, Sarah went to bring him in and found him with his head between his paws looking very peaceful, his beautiful Eskie fur blowing softly in the wind.
He had quietly gone to heaven.

I took the news very hard--it rocked my world-- Sherlock's death was so unexpected. I was in Minneapolis and Sherlock was at the lake. I always thought I would be with Sherlock when it happened. Upon examination, our vet, Dr. David, said he died from heart failure. I asked that Sherlock be wrapped in his favorite blanket and taken to Companion Animal Hospital to wait for me to come and get him.
Sherlock went for his last ride in our car to Hill Side Pet Cemetary where he was cremated on Thursday, September 3, 1998 almost to the hour one week after his death. I asked for some of Sherlock's doggy bones to be placed with him and for the man performing the cremation to tell Sherlock "Mommy loves you," when it happened. Sherlock's ashes will be stored in a beautiful wooden box with his name and date of birth and date of death engraved. There is also a spot for a photo of Sherlock on the front of the box.

There is a poem I want to share that has helped me greatly regarding Sherlock's death:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.

Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
