How I Became a Baha'i

In September of 1990 I decided that I did not believe in God. I guess I had felt that way for awhile but that was a turning point for me. I remember praying at this point, asking why I should bother to behave in a religious manner and that if I was making a mistake to please let me know. By the beginning of June (1991) things had reached an alltime low. I was heartbroken and extremely depressed. By the end of that month it became obvious to me that my life had fallen apart.

On the same day I came to this realization I also came to find out about the Baha'i Faith. I got on the bus and I sat down beside an acquaintence of mine who I had heard was a member of a religion called "the Baha'i Faith". I remember thinking, "okay God… I know, I know… I can't keep going this way." I sat down beside Chris and got straight to the point, saying "OK, tell me about the Baha'i Faith." He looked a little shocked. Then he said, "…well, there's a talk tonight by Dr. Aziz Yazdi and if you come you can hear all about it." I went to the meeting and I KNEW right away that I was a Baha'i. It was an awakening to something I had always known.

The next day my sister and I went to the library and read about it. I looked in the encyclopedias and she found a book called "Iran's Secret Pogrom", about the martyrdom of the Baha'is in Iran. We were both very impressed and felt that it was a legitimate religion.

A couple of weeks later I ran into Prudence, a girl who I had met at the Baha'i meeting, and she invited me to a fireside (an educational meeting about the Baha'i Faith). I showed up the next week at the address that she had given me. She seemed surprised and happy to see me. I attended the fireside every week. I even tryed to phone the Baha'i center to ask how I would become a Baha'i. I mentioned this to a Baha'i at one of the firesides. Everyone was shocked. They gave me a declaration card, which I signed. Over the next few months my sister and a close friend of mine also became Baha'is.

I have now been a Baha'i for nearly eight years and though I have not always followed the writings even to the best of my own ability, I have always been thankful to have this wonderful Faith to fall back on.

For those of you who do not know anything about the Baha'i Faith please take a look at "The Baha'is" (an online magazine). It gives a very in depth look at the Baha'is all around the world.

The crux of the Baha'i Faith is that the Messenger of all the Ages (the Return of Christ, Mohammed, Buddha, Zoroaster, Moses) revealed Himself to humanity in 1863. He called himself "Baha'u'llah" (the Glory of God) and spent most of his life in prison and exile.

The message of this religion is not one of individual salvation, but of worldwide salvation. There are Baha'i writings dealing with many issues of modern concern: vegetarianism, breastfeeding, parenting, non-violence, smoking, drinking, and drug abuse. Baha'u'llah also outlined a plan for a world governing organization and believed in the unity of all nations. We believe in the unity of God, Religion, and Humankind. The Baha'is play a large role at the United Nations.

Baha'u'llah wrote many, many books, tablets, prayers and letters that you can read to learn more about it! I know it sounds strange, but I'm sure Jesus' claims sounded bizarre to those around him. I really encourage anyone who is interested to read more about it. Just imagine if Christ has returned and you had an opportunity to know and just ignored it? One of the really easy to read, straight to the point books that was "revealed" by Baha'u'llah was "the Hidden Words" which are wonderful little verses which reveal pearls of wisdom (much resembling Psalms or the Qu'ran).

Here are some excerpts from "The Hidden Words":

O SON OF BEING!
Love Me, that I may love thee. If thou lovest Me not, My love can in no wise reach thee. Know this, O servant.

O SON OF BEING!
Make mention of Me on My earth, that in My heaven I may remember thee, thus shall Mine eyes and thine be solaced.
