In Egypt, the black cats were thought to be sacred; in England,
a black cat in the house could save a sailor from danger
at sea and black cats in general were lucky to have around.
In Germany, France, and parts of the United States, black
cats were thought to be companions of witches and
therefore very bad luck. If you believe that black cats
are bad luck, the way to stop trouble if the black cat
crosses your path is to take your hat off, turn around
on your head, and walk NINE steps before turning it around again.
If someone in the family is ill with a fever, wash the patient,
throw the water over a cat, and chase the cat outside.
