Other Information
From Western Horseman, March 1990 - "Speed was in Leo's family tree, most of it on the sire side. He was double-bred to Joe Reed P-3, through Joe Reed II and his dam, Little Fanny, also by Joe Reed P-3. But the early speed Leo exhibited as a 2-year-old also had been fostered by his granddam, Fanny Ashwell, by the Thoroughbred Ashwell.

In 1942, as a 2-year-old, Leo was sold by Lester Manning, Gatesville, Tex., to John W. Tilman, an attorney from Pawhuska, Okla., where Leo ran in match races through his 3-year-old year. When challengers became scarce, Leo went on to run in Texas and New Mexico, passing through several owners. W.C. Row brought him back to Oklahoma, where he was sold to Gene Moore, owner of the Rocking M Ranch in Fairfax.

Leo was used to work cattle, ran a few times, and received a few mares until his sale to Bud Warren. At Warren's home in Perry, Leo enjoyed many productive years. In all, he received mares for 23 seasons, and sired 554 registered foals. He is especially well-known as a sire of superior broodmares.

The mature horse, a sorrel, stood 14.3, and weighed about 1,175 pounds. His fierce competitiveness on the track was offset by a sweet disposition. Leo died of old age in 1967. A life-size monument was erected in the town of Perry."
