Ezra Putnam Dallas Family

Compiled by Brenda Slaughter (Note 1)

Our family loves to explore our family history including all of its extensions. This page continues the DALLAS family (constantly under construction, just as our family is). Thanks to Brenda Slaughter for providing this information that she has received from a number of different people, also.

We seek your input and comments on any and all we present at: Bill Smith, smithwil@emporia.edu

From the earlier Dallas Page: Our family relationship with the Dallas surname was created when Joseph Dallas married Dorcas Kinnick on 6 Nov 1823 in Belmont Co, Ohio. Dorcas was the daughter of John and Mary Kinnick. Their story is chronicled at The KINNICK Project and The Kinnick Family Resource Page on Rootsweb. John and Mary Kinnick were 4th great-grandparents of Bill Smith, the complier of this web site. Dorcas was, therefore, sister of Bill's 3rd great-grandfather, Walter W. Kinnick.

Family of Ezra Putnam Dallas and Malinda Ellen Shore

Ezra Putnam Dallas, son of James Alexander Dallas (Jr.) was born 29 Nov. 1833 in Belmont County Ohio. He died 26 March 1909 in Callao, Macon Co., Missouri. He is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Callao., Mo.

He married 21 March 1858, Malinda Ellen Shore,(2) daughter of Jeremiah Shore and Lucinda Hart. Malinda was born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, 20 June 1840 In Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, and died 18 Dec. 1899 in Callao, Macon Co., Mo.

Ezra Putnam Dallas, father of James Monroe Dallas, and two other children (the other six were born in Missouri), came to Macon County, Missouri from Tuscarawas County Ohio in a covered wagon in 1865, 38 days on the trail.

Ezra, sometimes stayed in his field at night to keep bushwhackers from stealing his horses. He built a big, long, two- story log house and prospered. He always had plenty of various kinds of apples in his cellar and had currents and blackberries too. He also raised sugarcane and made sorghum, which was stored in 50-gallon barrels. "The kids would be given a plate and sent to the cellar to get molasses. A wooden paddle would be lifted from the molasses barrel and allowed to run off onto the plate." The family ate lots of cornbread and molasses. Ezra also made sorghum for neighbors. They could often see 15 or 20 deer at their doorstep in Tuscarawas County Ohio before moving to Missouri.

Ezra liked to be dressed up and wear a tie. He also told jokes and his Grandchildren liked him. In later years he played the part of a country gentleman.
